Husband/wife duo Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley formed the band Yo La Tengo in 1984 in Hoboken, New Jersey. James McNew joined the band in 1992. Yo La Tengo has been called “the quintessential critics band,” known for creativity, independence and an eclectic approach to indie rock. Rolling Stone calls them “one of the most restless and most consistently good bands of the past 25 years.” The group has recorded 13 albums. Their most recent is Fade, released in 2013. They are in town for “The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller.” Yo La Tengo will provide live music accompaniment to Sam Green’s latest “live documentary” on April 17 at the Stateside at the Paramount.

NoelFINAL_DENoël Wells is a featured player on Saturday Night Live, her first season on the program. A native of San Antonio, Wells studied Radio-TV-Film at the University of Texas. While at UT she performed at Esther’s Follies, and she’s the first person from Austin’s flagship sketch show to make the leap to SNL. After graduating in 2010 she moved to Los Angeles and appeared in numerous online comedy videos. Her self-produced sketch videos have over 12 million views on YouTube. Wells is in Austin to perform at the Moontower Comedy Festival.

BaronMartin Baron is Executive Editor of The Washington Post, overseeing the Post’s print and digital news operations. Before joining the Post, Baron was editor of The Boston Globe for 11 years. During his tenure the Globe won six Pulitzer Prizes. Baron has also held top editing positions at The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and the Miami Herald.

Russell Gold

Russell Gold is the Senior Energy Reporter at The Wall Street Journal and author of the new book The Boom: How Fracking Ignited the American Energy Revolution and Changed the World. Gold was part of the Journal’s reporting team on the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill and explosion of the Deepwater Horizon. That reporting earned the Gerald Loeb Award for best business story and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in National Reporting. Gold lives in Austin.

Stelter joined CNN in November after six years at The New York Times, where he covered the television and digital media industries. Stelter founded the TV news blog TVNewser while a freshman in college, selling it six months later to MediaBistro.com. Stelter also wrote the New York Times best-seller Top of the Morning, which uncovers the darker side of morning television. Stelter is in Austin for a panel about multi-platform media at SXSW Interactive.

tamborJeffrey Tambor is a six-time Emmy nominated actor well known for playing off-beat characters. He became a household name when he played Hank Kingsley on The Larry Sanders Show in the mid-1990s and for playing George Bluth Sr. on Arrested Development. His newest role is starring in the Amazon pilot Transparent. Jeffrey Tambor is also one of the most-respected acting coaches in the industry, touring the country as a “Master Teacher.” Tambor is in Austin to keynote SXSWEdu and for his annual acting workshop for SXSW Film. The workshop is a convergence event, open to all Film and Interactive badge holders.

SchwartzmanJason Schwartzman is an actor who has appeared in numerous Wes Anderson movies including Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom. He also starred in I Heart Huckabees and Slackers, among many other films. Schwartzman is also a musician. He was drummer and songwriter for the band Phantom Planet before he started acting and has composed musical scores for the HBO show Bored to Death, Smallville and Slackers.

joel-klein-2x_267_192_80Joel Klein is CEO of Amplify, an education subsidiary of NewsCorp. He is the former chancellor of New York City Public Schools. Klein was appointed by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and held the position from 2002-2010. As chancellor he oversaw the country’s largest public school system of 1.1 million students and 136,000 employees. Amplify’s mission is to “reimagine the way teachers teach and students learn” by using technology and tablets to help “teachers to manage whole classrooms and, at the same time, empower them to offer more personalized instruction, so that students become more active, engaged learners.” Klein is in Austin for SXSWEdu.

He’s perhaps best known for playing Doug Wilson on the Showtime series “Weeds.” He was also one of the longest serving cast-members on Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1995. Nealon has starred in many cult comedies, including Grandma’s Boy and Joe Dirt. Nealon is in Austin for a two-night event at Cap City Comedy.

Mary Matalin and James Carville are both veteran political strategists, commentators and best-selling authors. Matalin served in the Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush administrations. Carville was the lead strategist for the 1992 Clinton campaign. Both were longtime political contributors to CNN. Matalin and Carville have been married for twenty years. Their newest book, Love & War: Twenty Years, Three Presidents, Two Daughters and One Louisiana Home was published earlier this month. They are in Austin for an event at the LBJ Presidential Library.
