KLRU receives Dell Foundation grant for early education initiatives

KLRU is the proud recipient of a Dell Foundation Equipping Youth Literate Communities grant. This two-year, $50,000 contribution will serve to empower youth to learn and excel in a digitally-driven economy — specifically, through support of Sesame Street and our Ready to Learn literacy program. We are grateful for the Dell Foundation’s generous and ongoing support of early education in Central Texas.

WordGirl's Season Premiere

Becky just wants to read a book on the last day of summer but Tobey and his latest robot creation are AGGRAVATING her. Can WordGirl figure out how to stop crime and PROLONG her last day of vacation?

Then, when TJ foils a crime during his baseball game with an EXTRAORDINARY home run, he becomes “the Home Run King,” the city’s latest superhero. FORTUNATELY, WordGirl steps in to save the day when he gets in over his head fighting real crimes.

Six new episodes will broadcast throughout the fall beginning September 13th.

Dinosaur Train Under the Sea

Climb aboard as Buddy and the entire Pteranodon family board the DINOSAUR TRAIN to embark on their first underwater adventure in the new one-hour special “Dinosaur Train Under the Sea,” airing Friday, August 20 on KLRU. The Pteranodon family learns about new aquatic creatures when they ride the train through a glass-encased time tunnel that dives down under the sea to explore the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic oceans. The train also features the new Aquacar, and open car filled with sea water for carrying their new friends.

Meet Our New Underwater Friends!

Elmer Elasmosaurus: The Dinosaur Train’s new Aquacar gets its first passenger when the Pteranodon family helps transport Elmer back to his home in the ocean.  This long-necked, giant marine reptile is a deep-sea diver with a special talent for holding his breath.

Carla Cretoxyrhina: On their underwater excursion, the Pteranodon family meets up with a young shark named Carla Cretoxyrhina, who turns out to be much nicer than her reputation suggests.

The Amazing Michelinoceras Brothers: Buddy and his family continue their underwater adventure by traveling deep underwater on the Dinosaur Train to view two backwards-bounding brothers named Max and Mitch Michelinoceras.

Paulie Pliosaurus: The Pteranodon family wrap up  their  Dinosaur Train underwater exploration with a visit to a marine reptile called  Paulie Pliosaurus, a creature known as the “T. rex of the Ocean.”

Cyberchase Summer Challenge

CYBERCHASE Summer Challenge 2010 Hacker's Challenge The Cyberchase Summer Challenge premieres on June 29, featuring eight straight weeks of new and encore episodes, new interactive content and new outreach initiatives to help kids overcome the summer slump in math and gear up for the new school year. Tune in every Tuesday at 4pm.

Summer is a time when children are at risk for losing gains in math learning if not offered educationally sustaining activities — and the risk is greater for losing math skills than reading skills.  The Summer Challenge will provide eight weeks of fun and free resources to strengthen kids’ involvement with math and problem solving all summer long.


  • An all-new gaming component will reveal new challenges every week to keep kids actively engaged at home.
  • Storytelling features will motivate kids to share their Summer Challenge experiences with others.
  • The PBS KIDS GO! video player will feature Summer Challenge video clips and full episodes.
  • Eight new printable activities for teachers, parents and kids will deliver fun, STEM-based challenges for real world application.
  • Teachers and parents can also access free, downloadable video clips and episodes to support their Summer Challenge activities.
  • Additional printable activities for kids will offer extra summer fun.

Sid the Science Kid

Mom, Dad and Zeke have front row seats as Sid, Gabriela, May and Gerald perform a backyard singalong in “No School Singalong Special!” No School Singalong Special premiers June 21st at 8:30 a.m.!

SID THE SCIENCE KID celebrates the first day of summer with the all-new “No School Singalong Special” premiering June 21 on KLRU’s PBS KIDS.  The half hour episode features Sid and his friends performing their favorite science-song hits in a back yard singalong extravaganza!

KLRU Kids Lineup change

The new KLRU KIDS schedule will take effect the week of September 7th.

On Monday, Sept. 7th, there is a Dinosaur Train marathon for Labor Day from 8-10 a.m.  Dinosaur Train is seen through the eyes of Buddy, a preschool-aged Tyrannosaurus Rex. Buddy and his adoptive family of Pteranodons go for adventures on the Dinosaur Train to meet all kinds of dinosaurs in different eras and learn fascinating new facts about these incredible creatures.

On Tuesday, September 8th, the new line-up will start (see the list below). One big change will be on the weekends.  On Saturdays, Thomas & Friends and Bob The Builder will move to a new time, now at 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. On Sundays, the children’s programming will run an additional hour until 9 a.m.

New Kids Lineup on KLRU

On September 1st, KLRU will be adjusting the Kids programming blocks on all our channels to add new shows and to reflect other changes by PBS. With the new KLRU lineup, Mr. Rogers will only air once a week at 7 a.m. on Fridays and The Teletubbies will no longer be offered by PBS so will not be part of the KLRU Kids lineup. KLRU is providing several new kids shows for Central Texas kids including including Martha Speaks, Sid the Science Kid and Wunderkind Little Amadeus.
