KLRU, for my family and yours…

We must raise $20,000 more to meet the $50,000 Board Challenge Match. Catherine Robb, grandaughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson and KLRU Board Member & former Chair of the Board, shares why she’s committed to supporting KLRU through the Board Challenge Match.

My family and I have had a lifelong love affair with KLRU. Beginning with my grandfather, who signed the Public Broadcasting Act in 1967, and continuing through multiple generations – – we have all loved watching, and have enjoyed learning from, the entertaining and educational programming found on our local PBS station.

Growing up, public television was the one thing I always knew I could turn on when I was with my grandmother, especially PBS Newshour, which was “her” show. I knew we would see interesting, quality programs that would leave us glad we had taken the time to watch. And more recently, my nieces got really excited when they saw me carrying my Odd Squad totebag; they were quite impressed that I knew about this PBS Kids show. I actually get positive comments on my tote quite often, demonstrating the substantial love for PBS in our community.

Personally, I consider my involvement with KLRU to be one of the highlights of my time in Austin and one of the many reasons that I am so glad I decided to stay here after law school. This dedication to KLRU is not only for the many ways it benefits me (I also love the Newshour, as well as local programming like Austin City Limits, Overheard, and many many others), but also for its ability to impact the larger Central Texas community. It is one of those rare organizations where our supporters and the people we serve are quite often the same people.

This is why I’m committed to supporting KLRU and I’m asking you to support as well. And as a Board Member, I’m excited to share that we’re in the final days of our $50,000 Board Challenge Match and need to raise just $20,000 to reach it! So make your gift of any amount now to double your generosity and its impact on our community.

Supporting KLRU really is giving a gift to yourself as well as to your neighbors. And the vast array of programming means there is something for everyone in my family, and yours. Won’t you join me in making a gift of support to KLRU today?

A powerful connection with KLRU

Christy Carpenter, daughter of Liz Carpenter and  KLRU Board Member & Former Vice Chair of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, shares why she’s committed to supporting KLRU through the $50,000 Board Challenge Match.

I cannot imagine life without public television – it provides essential daily nourishment for my mind and spirit. It’s my go-to place to gain a clearer perspective and better understanding of my community and my world. From public affairs to history to culture to entertainment and more – it enhances and enriches my life. It’s like a good friend that I can count on.

The fact that KLRU is not commercially driven makes all the difference. It addresses us as citizens rather than as consumers and focuses on quality rather than ratings. KLRU provides a kind of community glue – tying us all together, celebrating what makes Austin unique, keeping us informed about Central Texas issues and healing us in times of tragedy. Moreover, the station’s educational outreach and area partnerships magnify its impact in ways not visible on the screen. This kind of connection is powerful and unique.

Your donation helps KLRU produce outstanding programming right here such as Austin City Limits, Overheard with Evan Smith and BBQ with Franklin – showcasing Austin life and culture to viewers not only in Central Texas but throughout the country. Your support also helps bring PBS programming to our entire community, reaching all ages, from our youngest learners to our long-time fans.

These are the reasons I’m committed to supporting KLRU during this fundraising drive, and I’m asking you to join me. As a Board Member, I’m pleased to participate in the $50,000 challenge match from the KLRU Board of Directors. For every dollar you donate, KLRU’s Board will contribute the same amount up to $50,000, potentially raising $100,000 for the station during this drive!

Supporting KLRU is a way of demonstrating your appreciation for what makes our public television station so special. Won’t you make your gift today so everyone in Central Texas can continue to benefit from KLRU’s quality, educational and informational programming?

Announcing the $50,000 KLRU Board Challenge Match

Tyson Tuttle, Chair of the KLRU Board of Directors, announces a $50,000 Challenge Match to the Central Texas community from the KLRU Board of Directors.

PBS has been a part of our household for years. Before our kids were born, Austin City Limits helped give us an introduction to Austin. As parents, PBS was the only channel on our TV with quality, educational television that entertained and stimulated our kids. And as people involved in the community, we’ve benefitted from news and public affairs, local and beyond.

KLRU brings quality, inspirational programming into your home and mine. KLRU tells stories about Austin that resonate here and elsewhere. And KLRU looks for ways to use stories and information to positively impact the region and this growing city we call “home”.

Your support allows KLRU to be an essential voice in Central Texas, and a lifeline for the entire community. And considering that the vast majority of KLRU’s support comes from Central Texas, it’s up to you, and me, to make sure KLRU can continue to provide the quality and diversity of programs and experiences we’ve come to expect.

This is why as the Chair of KLRU’s Board of Directors, I’m pleased to announce a $50,000 Board Challenge Match in support of this fundraising drive. If KLRU can raise $50,000, the Board of Directors will match it by making a generous $50,000 contribution, potentially bringing in $100,000 for the station. I encourage you to make your gift right now so we can meet this match by the end of this drive.

KLRU provides access to thoughtful and wide ranging programs that bring new ideas and experiences to our homes, and especially to our kids. Won’t you join me in supporting this organization that is dedicated to actively pursuing a better community?

Tyson Tuttle
Chair, KLRU Board of Directors
President and CEO, Silicon Labs

We are out of of time and need to reach our goal

We have come to the end of our 17 day pledge drive and are $44,220 short of our goal. KLRU is not alone. We’ve heard from a number of PBS stations across the country who are stretching to reach their August fundraising goals. Many will choose to extend on-air fundraising, instead of returning to regular programming. KLRU remains committed to keeping our pledge drives short, so we have returned to the regular schedule you depend on.

If you’ve already made a giftthank you. If you haven’t, now is the time we need you the most.

Tell your friends, neighbors, and co-workers that KLRU needs them, too. We are Austin’s only locally owned and operated television station and we need everyone – and especially you to survive.

Please take a minute, make a donation, and spread the word.

Watch and Win! Celebrate Julia Child tonight at 7pm

We have been looking forward to this night for a very long time! In celebration of Julia Child’s 100th birthday, some of the best chefs and foodies in Austin will be joining us LIVE in studio during a special presentation of three classic episodes of The French Chef featuring Julia’s take on omelettes, boullaibase, and roasted chicken, tonight at 7pm on KLRU.

If you call in during the evening with your support for KLRU, you might be talking with one of these wonderful people on the phone: Rene Ortiz (La Condesa, Sway), Laura Sawicki (La Condesa, Sway), Philip Speer (Uchi/Uchiko), Aaron & Stacy Franklin (Franklin BBQ), Karla Loeb (Slow Food Austin), Larry McGuire (Lamberts, Perla’s, Elizabeth Street Cafe, Fresa’s, Jeffrey’s), John Bates (Noble Pig), Sonya Cote (Hillside Farmacy, Homegrown Revival) and Casey Wilcox (Justine’s), and Patty Cater (Central Market).

This is the perfect opportunity to support the great history of cooking shows on public television and celebrate the incredible culinary scene here in Austin. We love when we can connect the awesome programming on KLRU with our local community and who better to showcase the KLRU vision of inspiration and creativity than Julia herself.

Every gift made tonight (or made online here) will automatically be entered to win one of several gift certificates to the places above and others: Olive & June, Parkside, OliviaThe Back Space, Foreign & DomesticLenoir, Chez Nous, Trace, Dai Due, Second Bar + Kitchen, and Barley Swine. A gift of just $25 could mean a dinner at a critically-acclaimed Austin restaurant – and you’ll be supporting Austin’s only locally owned and operated television station at the same time – what’s not to love about that?!

KLRU needs your support during this August pledge drive – if you love food, you won’t want to miss out on tonight’s special tribute to Julia Child beginning tonight at 7pm. Thank you for celebrating with us.
