This is your Austin. We are your KLRU.

September 30 is the end of our fiscal year and we need your help to reach that date with a balanced budget. Please take a minute and join our Countdown Campaign to raise $115,000 in the next 7 days. As we celebrate 50 years of public television in Central Texas, we know that there are so many of you that value KLRU, but now we’re asking you to support us with a gift - any amount you can give will make a huge difference to KLRU right now.

KLRU is Austin’s only locally owned and operated television station. With over half of our support coming from individuals like you, we take very seriously our commitment to inspire – and be inspired by –  everyone in Central Texas. We are public television so KLRU is your station.

I hope you’ll take this opportunity to reflect on how much you value KLRU’s commitment to keeping Austin entertained, informed and educated and join our Countdown Campaign right now by:

  • Making your first gift ever to KLRU right now because your children love Sesame Street, Word Girl, and Dinosaur Train.
  • Renewing your support of KLRU this year because you can’t live without new episodes of Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow, and Doctor Who.
  • Casting your vote for your favorite local programs like Central Texas Gardener, Overheard with Evan Smith, The Daytripper, and Arts in Context.
  • Giving an additional gift to KLRU because your trust PBS Newshour, Frontline, and Washington Week.
  • Telling your friends to support the Countdown Campaign because this is their station, too.

We are diligent stewards of our limited resources, consistently trimming expenses while at the same time preserving the strength of our content and community. Despite our best efforts, we’re approaching the end of our fiscal year with a deficit. We need your help, right now to reach our Countdown Campaign goal by September 30th.

Please join us and thank you!

Small gift, big difference, right now!

We’re approaching the end of our fiscal year with a budget deficit and we need your help to reach our goal by September 30. As of this morning, we’re $185,900 short. More than ever we need the help of our loyal viewers – YOU – to join us. Each and every gift, no matter the amount, from every person who is able to will help tremendously right now.

We hope you’ll consider joining our Countdown Campaign this month. Maybe you’ll decide to renew your support today – make an additional gift for the year – or tell a friend to become a brand new member!

Whatever you do, we appreciate your generosity and support of KLRU-TV, Austin PBS – YOUR public television station.

Look at what you’ve done!
Thanks to support from our community, KLRU has been able to do so much in 2011-2012:

  • Threw a downtown block party for our whole city to celebrate 50 years of public television in Austin (Cookie Monster was there, too!)
  • Brought Community Cinema back to Windsor Public Library for another great season of independent film – Free every month for anyone to attend.
  • Showcased phenomenal women in our community who are changing lives through the national online project Women and Girls Lead (we’ll highlight more women in 2012-2013 so stay tuned!)
  • Challenged hundreds of school-aged kids to read this summer with the KLRU Summer Learning Challenge
  • Brought you new episodes of Downton Abbey, Frontline, Moyers & Company, NOVA, Nature, Antiques Roadshow, Market Warriors, Arts in Context, Central Texas Gardener, Overheard with Evan Smith, Austin City Limits, and many more!

KLRU donors tour the Wine Roads of Texas

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of taking folks who donated during our June pledge drive on a tour of some great wineries and vineyards in the hill country. Inspired by the Wine Roads of Texas series on KLRU, we toured (and tasted!) Duchman Family Winery, Becker Vineyards, and Solara Estate Winery.

We were lucky to have some expert wine folks on the bus with us including Wes Marshall, author of the travel book Wine Roads of Texas; Alphonse Dotson, owner of Certenberg Vineyards; Ron Yates, owner or Spicewood Vineyards; and Jay Knepp from Salt Lick Cellars.

Thanks to everyone who donated to KLRU and to the generous winemakers and owners who donated their time to really make our experience special.

Last Chance

Today is the day you can help KLRU reach our goal and raise $25,000 by August 31. Some of you have made a gift this drive already – some of you support us throughout the year – but for those who haven’t or for those who could give something more, please act now.

We promise to turn your dollars into action: producing quality programming foreveryone; providing invaluable educational training and tools for our students, teachers and parents; and creating the space for community dialogue around the most relevant and important issues today.

Together we can end this month with a bang!

We asked, you answered – Only $30,000 more to go!

When we announced yesterday that we were $45,000 short of our August pledge drive goal, over 125 of you quickly reacted with your support together raising $15,000 is less than 24 hours!

We are now just $30,000 short of what we need to raise this month and now is the time for you to join this final push towards our $240,000 goal. If you made a gift yesterday, THANK YOU! If you haven’t made a donation during this August drive, or if you think you could give a little more, please do so right now.

We can get to that goal with YOUR help. Your support – and the support of your neighbors, friends, and family – is what makes everything we do possible. Together we can continue to make a difference in Austin – please take a minute and make your gift today. Thank you!

We are out of of time and need to reach our goal

We have come to the end of our 17 day pledge drive and are $44,220 short of our goal. KLRU is not alone. We’ve heard from a number of PBS stations across the country who are stretching to reach their August fundraising goals. Many will choose to extend on-air fundraising, instead of returning to regular programming. KLRU remains committed to keeping our pledge drives short, so we have returned to the regular schedule you depend on.

If you’ve already made a giftthank you. If you haven’t, now is the time we need you the most.

Tell your friends, neighbors, and co-workers that KLRU needs them, too. We are Austin’s only locally owned and operated television station and we need everyone – and especially you - to survive.

Please take a minute, make a donation, and spread the word.

#CookForJulia: ACL's Music in the Kitchen!

Thanks to Glenda Facemire, ACL’s long time makeup artist and stylist, we unearthed a Julia Child Pot Roast recipe from Music in the Kitchen: Favorite Recipes from Austin City Limits Performers, a beautiful book that Glenda created a few years ago.

Robbie Fulks, alt-country singer-songwriter, chose Julia Child’s Pot Roast because “it never fails.”

Hope you join us tonight for Julia Child’s 100th Birthday Celebration at 7pm on KLRU – we’ll be airing some of the greatest French Chef episodes and have Austin chefs answering your phone calls – we’ll also have tons of giveaways so tune in and support KLRU tonight!

Watch and Win! Celebrate Julia Child tonight at 7pm

We have been looking forward to this night for a very long time! In celebration of Julia Child’s 100th birthday, some of the best chefs and foodies in Austin will be joining us LIVE in studio during a special presentation of three classic episodes of The French Chef featuring Julia’s take on omelettes, boullaibase, and roasted chicken, tonight at 7pm on KLRU.

If you call in during the evening with your support for KLRU, you might be talking with one of these wonderful people on the phone: Rene Ortiz (La Condesa, Sway), Laura Sawicki (La Condesa, Sway), Philip Speer (Uchi/Uchiko), Aaron & Stacy Franklin (Franklin BBQ), Karla Loeb (Slow Food Austin), Larry McGuire (Lamberts, Perla’s, Elizabeth Street Cafe, Fresa’s, Jeffrey’s), John Bates (Noble Pig), Sonya Cote (Hillside Farmacy, Homegrown Revival) and Casey Wilcox (Justine’s), and Patty Cater (Central Market).

This is the perfect opportunity to support the great history of cooking shows on public television and celebrate the incredible culinary scene here in Austin. We love when we can connect the awesome programming on KLRU with our local community and who better to showcase the KLRU vision of inspiration and creativity than Julia herself.

Every gift made tonight (or made online here) will automatically be entered to win one of several gift certificates to the places above and others: Olive & June, Parkside, OliviaThe Back Space, Foreign & DomesticLenoir, Chez Nous, Trace, Dai Due, Second Bar + Kitchen, and Barley Swine. A gift of just $25 could mean a dinner at a critically-acclaimed Austin restaurant – and you’ll be supporting Austin’s only locally owned and operated television station at the same time – what’s not to love about that?!

KLRU needs your support during this August pledge drive – if you love food, you won’t want to miss out on tonight’s special tribute to Julia Child beginning tonight at 7pm. Thank you for celebrating with us.
