Join KLRU Q for Movie Night every Saturday at 7:30 pm. Hours of entertainment are guaranteed! Here’s what this Saturday looks like:

First at 7 pm on Arts in Context, the Intergalactic Nemesis, Book One: Target Earth was an instant sensation. Created by an original comic-book story projected panel-by-panel on a video screen while three actors voiced the characters, one performer created sound-effects, and a keyboardist performed the score.

Then at 7:30 pm in On Story, Men in Black writer, Ed Solomon, explores the genesis of the movie and its journey from pre-production through post. Solomon documents his experiences getting fired and re-hired on the project, the evolution of the story, and working with the cast and crew.

Like the previous week, this week’s feature film stars Humphrey Bogart. In The Maltese Falcon, private eye Sam Spade encounters sundry characters (Mary Astor, Peter Lorre), all seeking a coveted statuette. The movie begins at 8 pm.

Grab some popcorn and join KLRU Q for Movie Night this Saturday! The feature film this week is The Big Sleep starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Martha Vickers. In the movie, Raymond Chandler’s private eye Philip Marlowe follows two wealthy sisters through a maze of murders.

The movie starts at 8 pm, but KLRU Q provides additional film-related entertainment beforehand that you won’t want to miss. Beginning at 7 pm on Arts in Context, the late artist, writer, cowboy sage, and visionary A Kelly Pruitt is honored in Presidio County, Texas. Pruitt was a highly acclaimed West Texas artist, listed as one of Texas Monthly’s “People We’ll Miss–2009,” second only to Walter Cronkite. SInce Pruitt’s death, influential artists, architects and entrepreneurs has traveled to the City of Presidio in the Chihuahuan Desert of Texas to honor Pruitt’s vision of La Junta Heritage Center through conservation, agriculture and cultural preservation.

At 7:30 pm in On Story, the Clint Eastwood/David Peoples classic Unforgiven is deconstructed by Into the West’s Kirk Ellis and Apaloosa’s Robert Knott as they explore its gritty action, ambiguous morality, and the tried-and-true tropes of its genre. Christian Baker’s short film, The Well, follows suit, trailing a young Civil War soldier stationed alone on the US/Mexico faced with nothing but his own demons.

Revisit an older American classic, The Caine Mutiny, during KLRU Q’s Movie Night. The movie airs at 8 pm and is brought to you by the All-star Film Collection. Here’s the synopsis: World War II Naval officer (Van Johnson) is court-martialed for relieving paranoid Capt. Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) of command during a typhoon.

KLRU Q supplements the evening’s movie with On Story starting before the feature film at 7:30. In the episode, Callie Khouri reflects upon her experience working with Ridley Scott and writing the classic female-driven-buddy film, Thelma and Louise. It’s followed by Avram Dodson’s short film, Pistachio Milk, a coming of age tale about a young suitor using only his wits and a bottle of pistachio milk to pursue his love interest.

The exploration of America’s classic films continues with Fred Macmurray: The Guy Next Door at 10:05 pm. Amiable and unassuming, Fred MacMurray went from small-town boy to one of Hollywood and television’s most enduring stars. MacMurray signed his first contract with Paramount Studios in 1934, and quickly rose to play romantic lead roles opposite such major stars as Claudette Colbert, Carole Lombard, Katharine Hepburn, Paulette Goddard and Marlene Deitrich.

This week, Movie Night with KLRU Q features Call Northside 777 at 8 pm from the All-star Film Collection. In the thrilling film, a Chicago newsman (James Stewart) digs up the story of a scrubwoman’s son (Richard Conte) framed for murder.

But, that’s not all! Join KLRU Q prior to the movie for even more entertainment. Beginning at 7:30 pm in On Story, Rian Johnson (Looper), Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko), and Roberto Orci (Star Trek), masters of weaving time travel into the fabric of film, dissect the elements that make for a believable “operating system” when writing a comprehensible timeline for a screenplay. A Conversation About Cheating with my Time Traveling Future Self accompanies this episode, trailing one man’s attempt to better his life.

Finally, in Pioneers of Television at 9:55 pm, as viewers reveled in being transported to shadowy underworlds, creative geniuses emerged in the forms of Jack Webb (“Dragnet”), Desi Arnaz (“The Untouchables”) and Bruce Geller (“Mannix” and “Mission: Impossible”). Groundbreaking actors Bill Cosby (“I Spy”) and Angie Dickinson (“Police Woman”) reveal the methods behind their successes as the first African-American and breakthrough female lead characters in a television series. Barbara Bain and Martin Landau share the secrets behind the success of the innovative hit “Mission: Impossible, ” while the evolution of Peter Falk’s amazing characterization in his role as “Columbo” is recalled. And James Garner, in his only recent interview, along with series creator Stephen J. Cannell, recounts the success of the “The Rockford Files’” reluctant crime solver.

KLRU Q is switching it up a bit on movie night by airing a few episodes of a television series instead of a movie this Saturday. But, don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed.

First, the Hollywood review show Just Seen It airs at 7 p.m. Watch the review show where industry professionals present their takes on current movies and TV shows, and interview Hollywood insiders.

In On Story, Vince Gilligan, creator of the AMC hit series Breaking Bad, reflects upon the show’s hyper-serialized storytelling, along with his inspirations and influences. He’s also accompanied by Victor Nores’ short film, Euthanas Inc., about an old lady whose family wishes to no longer be burdened by her presence, and her plans to grant them an unexpected change of scene.

Following at 8, watch a few episodes of another thrilling television series, Amnesia. It’s a gripping psychological thriller that follows the crumbling life of Detective Sergeant “Mack” Stone, a black-out drunk, and his dangerous obsession with an unsolved mystery. While investigating the disappearance of his wife, Stone, losing his grip on reality, hones in on amnesia patient John Dean and pursues him relentlessly. But, as Stone’s behavior becomes more erratic, his claims seem less credible – leaving him to question his own memory. A suspenseful story packed with intricate twists, this intelligent drama will keep audiences guessing until the very end, as the two flawed protagonists move towards their thrilling final confrontation.
