On Monday night, members of the community joined staff live in the studio to help fundraise for KLRU. It was a great kickoff to this week of live television breaks during the regular primetime lineup.
Throughout Antiques Roadshow Austin appraisers gave two lucky KLRU fans a professional examination of their jewelry. Rebekkah Kwast brought in watches that had belonged to her grandmother. After Ralph Mothnar gave a closer look at one of the pieces, a gold watch he discovered to still be in working condition, he determined the value to be around $300.
Elizabeth Chapman’s antique ring proved to be a big surprise. She knew the piece was from her grandmother, a Mardi Gras queen in New Orleans, but was thrilled when Sarah Williams valued the Victorian era ring at more than $3000.
During American Experience we were joined for an interview with Sebastian Puente CEO, Cultural Strategies. Along with his insights on Austin’s Mexican American community he shared a touching story about watching A Class Apart together with his daughter and the important discussion on culture and history that followed.

Children’s Mental Health Awareness Fair took place on May 6th at Lucy Read Pre-K Demonstration School. This is the fifth year for such an event which focuses on decreasing stigma and increasing awareness of mental health issues in children ages 0 – 8. This year’s theme was “My Feelings are a Work of Art.” An area for a book reading activity was planned which promotes attachment between parents and children along with many booths manned by non-profits with helpful information for parents. KLRU donated over 325 bilingual books that focused on feelings and mental health along with several door prizes for the 250 families that attended the event. Clifford and Maya & Miguel made an appearance to the delight of all the children.
On Saturday, March 27, 2010, six child care providers, their friends and family gathered in the Austin City Limits Studio to be celebrated as outstanding caregivers in Central Texas. Melissa Huber, 2008 Central Texas Child Care Provider of the Year, presented a short training on conflict resolution using A Place of Our Own/Los Niños en su Casa parenting series. Kierstan Schwab, Executive Director, Texas Public Broadcasting Association, discussed the role TPBA has had in early child care. After a catered lunch, the providers viewed a short KLRU-produced video on the 2010 Central Texas Child Care Provider of the Year, Brandi & David Hitchcock of Austin TX. To wrap up the celebration, Bill Stotesbery, KLRU’s CEO presented each caregiver with a certificate and a bag of gifts as our way of saying “Thank you!”

For the final night of the December fundraising drive KLRU staff volunteered to man the phones while their co-workers worked to produce live pledge breaks during Nature.
Between live tv breaks we gathered around the monitors and watched the episode which was called “Born Wild: The First Days of Life” and highlighted struggles the animal kingdom face from birth.
Many of us at KLRU have animal babies in our lives so in honor of Sunday’s episode of Nature we present these furry members of our families:
