Valentine’s Day Music Night on KLRUQ

Since February 14th is the day of love, use it to celebrate your love of music with KLRUQ! At 6 pm, take a look into Elvis Presley’s roots and rise to fame. At 7pm, learn all you need to know about Frank Sinatra’s career. On American Masters at 8 pm, see how Marvin Hamlisch went from child prodigy to popular composer. At 9:30 pm, check out never-before-seen footage of Dave Clark Five.

Elvis: Return To Tupelo at 6 pm
In the 1950s and ’60s, Elvis Presley became an icon of rock n’ roll around the world. But understanding the Elvis story requires going back to his origins in rural Tupelo, Mississippi. Elvis: Return To Tupelo documents the period from his birth in 1935 during the depths of the Great Depression, to his breakout year 1956, when Elvis made a triumphant return to his hometown.

Frank Sinatra: The Voice Of Our Time  at 7 pm
Hosted by singer Mel Torme, this documentary chronicles the career of Frank Sinatra. The program focuses on Sinatra’s career from the 1940s through the 1960s, using archival footage and clips of Sinatra in newsreels, television programs, and films.

American Masters Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love at 8 pm
By age 31, Marvin Hamlisch had won four Grammys, an Emmy, three Oscars, a Tony and a Pulitzer Prize, making him one of only 2 PEGOT’s ever. A child prodigy accepted at Juilliard at age six, Hamlisch’s classical training laid the groundwork for his popular compositions. A rich archival legacy, interviews with his A-list collaborators, and cooperation from his family combine to tell this rich and engrossing story.

Dave Clark Five — Glad All Over  at 9:30 pm
In a frequently overlooked historical fact, The Dave Clark Five were actually the first English group to tour America in May of 1964, and thus were the first to spearhead the ensuring “British Invasion” of rock & roll that went on to change the world. The film features never-before-seen footage from Clark’s personal archives together with clips from the hit UK series Ready Steady Go! with performances by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding.
