Giveaway: Mariachi Vargas en Concierto on June 7th

The world-renown, 115-year-old mariachi band Mariachi Vargas is inducting its sixth generation of members with a special performance at the Long Center in Austin on June 7th at 8pm. Tickets are on sale now at the Long Center

Our friends at Mariachi Vargas have given KLRU a limited number of tickets to giveaway to our viewers. Email giveaways@klru.org by 9 am on May 30th. We will randomly choose three winners who will each receive two tickets to the performance.

Mariachi Vargas en Concierto captivates heart and soul with a live concert experience of Mexico’s finest music with El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo, and some Texas favorites! Mariachi Vargas is one of the world’s most influential and revered mariachi groups, and has been since 1898. There have since been five generations of musicians. It’s time to introduce the sixth generation of Mariachi Vargas under the direction of the new violinist, vocalist and director, Carlos Martínez, nephew of the previous director José “Pepe” Martínez.

The award-winning Austin area performers Mariachi Nueva Generación from Texas State University and the “Best Mariachi Vocalist in the U.S.” William “Carlton” Gálvez from Kyle, Texas will start off the concert. A special guest appearance of the 11-year-old singing prodigy Angélica Vargas will launch her first recording for her self-titled CD.

Hardly Sound is a documentary TV series focused on Texas underground music and artists. The series focuses on music but goes beyond the recording studio to tell the story of the band members with insight into the creative process. Season 2 begins on Sept. 9 as part of KLRU Q’s nightly music block at 11 pm. In preparation for the new season, KLRU Q presents all of season one back-to-back on Labor Day (Sept. 2) starting at 9:30 pm.

Bad Lovers at 10 pm
Dive into the world of the Austin, Texas garage rock scene with “The Bad Lovers” and all their rock ‘n’ roll cohorts as they talk about their adventurous past, hopeful future, and the sometimes tenuous friendships that they’ve formed over the years.

Royal Forest at 10:30 pm
Take to the skies with psychedelic rock band Royal Forest as they lead the Hardly Sound team on an epic adventure through the desert, in a submarine, and up in the air. It all culminates with the band recording a song in a tiny Cessna flying over north Austin. Royal Forest will inspire you with their spirit of adventure.

Emcee Eats at 11 pm
Join Vincent Martinez, one of the most stunningly original artists in Austin, as he lives his self-proclaimed “Jazz Life.” Then marvel at his undeniable hooks and poetic, personal lyrics as he steps into the studio as Emcee Eats.

Ralph White at 11:30 pm
On the fifth and final episode of the first season of Hardly Sound…step into the world of pioneering roots musician Ralph White. Watch to see what dogs, yuppies, love, and Charles Whitman have in common with White and his friends.

The latest installment of Backstage Austin features the melodic, metal, musical-giants of rock: Deftones.  The notoriously private band granted Backstage Austin all access to their recent show at ACL Live at The Moody Theater.  Before the band played to the sold-out crowd, they discussed their love for Texas, and the secret to their 20 plus year success.  Only Backstage Austin brings you along for Deftones’ soundcheck, takes you into the dressing room, and delivers a candid interview with one of rock music’s most interesting bands.
