Brains & History on KLRU Q 11/17

KLRU Q Featured

Here’s what’s happening on KLRU-Q Monday, November 17:

Beginning at 8 pm, on trial is Jimmy Moran, who at 18 took part in a store robbery during which the storeowner’s wife was shot and grievously injured. Presiding is distinguished U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff, who has a longstanding interest in neuroscience and its conceivable effect on criminal law. The trial raises common questions: Is a witness lying? How reliable is eyewitness testimony? What’s the best way to avoid a biased jury? How well can the defendant’s intentions be judged? Alan Alda explores how brain-scanning technology is providing insights into these questions and discusses the implications of neuroscience entering the courtroom. This episode of Brains on Trial with Alan Alda showcases the guilt phase of Moran’s trial. We peer into the brains of others in the courtroom: the witnesses, judges and jurors.

At 9 pm, Edward & George: Two Brothers, One Throne tells the remarkable story of two brothers and two women at the heart of an infamous episode in British history. While the story of Edward and Wallis is fairly well known, the relationship between Edward and George has seldom been explored. The abdication marked the end of the fraternal friendship between the two – a friendship that would never be repaired. Using archival footage along with new interviews (including ones with Royal biographer Hugo Vickers and the Countess Mountbatten of Burma), we examine how, despite their differences, the brothers looked for similar qualities in the women they loved. These quests changed their relationship from one of love and loyalty to suspicion and betrayal.

Following at 9:55 pm, the documentary Hitler’s Favourite Royal tells the extraordinary story of the young English prince, Charles Edward, who became a forgotten footnote in the royal family’s history because of his relationship with Germany and, ultimately, Adolf Hitler. The program, narrated by Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, features exclusive first-ever interviews with the convicted Nazi’s granddaughters.

KLRU Q is broadcast channel 18.3. It is also available to digital cable subscribers of Grande on 284 and Time Warner on 20.

Halloween with KLRU Q Featuring Strange Town

Get into the Halloween “spirit” with KLRU Q beginning at 8:55 pm on Friday, October 31. KLRU Q will be airing three episodes of Strange Town, where Mark and Billy will take you on a voyage through the history of unsettled stories that are left behind at haunted locations in Texas. Do spirits exist with the living? If so, are these lingering energies willing to communicate from beyond?

The first episode of Strange Town takes a trip to Galveston Island to investigate the majestic Hotel Galvez. Are the stories of a lost soul searching for her lover true? Are orphans that were killed in a hurricane still wandering the halls?

Following at 9:25 pm, a two-part episode begins at the Austin Pizza Garden. A building with over 130 years of history where multiple entities have made themselves known to the employees and guests. Then, they investigate Austin’s Inn at Pearl Street, a once abandoned home turned modern-day Bed & Breakfast. Guests report shadows, apparitions, and other unexplained activity.

The last episode of Strange Town at 9:55 pm investigates the most haunted building in Seguin, Texas, the Magnolia Hotel. This 170-year-old establishment first opened its doors to weary travelers in 1844 and since then has experienced many tragedies and deaths within its walls and is said to be inhabited by 13 unsettled spirits. Which ones will Mark and Billy encounter?

We hope you join us for this haunting adventure only on KLRU Q!
