KLRU Q - Night at the Movies

KLRU-Q’s Saturday Night at the Movies presents a full-length feature film every Saturday night, plus extra content that gives the evening an exciting spin. Each film explores the work of legendary actors and actresses through many important films from their careers. Here is a peek of what this Saturday has in store:

7 pm Just Seen It - We review the new Sci-Fi thriller, AFTER EARTH, starring Will and Jaden Smith. We check in with The Bluths and their re-boot of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. With all the Sci-Fi movies coming out this summer, we offer you our Sci-Fi Favorites, and welcome back Clark Kent in MAN OF STEEL – plus give you our DVD pick of the week!

7:30 pm On Story: Presented by the Austin Film Festival - The voices behind THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, BRIDESMAIDS, and RACHEL GETTING MARRIED deliberate how the most impressionable characters – both good and evil – are compelling because of their flaws, complexities, and personal truths. Accompanied by the short film, MENTIROSO by writer/director Will Shipley about trailing a young boy whose incessant lies are almost as far-fetched as an astonishing encounter with the most beautiful girl in town.

8 pm Dead Ringer - Edith (Bette Davis) kills Margaret, her twin, and takes her identity, fooling Edith’s boyfriend (Karl Malden) but not Margaret’s lover. Cast: Bette Davis, Karl Malden, Peter Lawford.

10 pm  Drive-in Movie Memories - A film celebration of drive in movie theaters, one of America’s greatest symbols of youth, freedom and the automobile. What started as the business venture an auto parts dealer to make some easy money accidentally became a magical place where romance, fun and a sense of community flourished.

8:00pm   Map Makers  ”Power: The D-Day Invasion Maps” – Focuses on the top-secret invasion maps of the Normandy coast created during World War II.

8:55pm   Navy Heroes of Normandy – Veterans set out to ensure the Navy’s role in the Allied invasion of Europe in 1944 is remembered.

9:55pm   American Road to Victory “The Americans on D-Day” – Battlefield historian Ellwood von Seibold tours the D-Day landings in his 1943 Dodge Command car.

8:00pm   Hindenburg and Hitler “The Making of a Fuehrer” - The political career of Paul von Hindenburg, Germany’s chancellor from 1925 to 1934, is chronicled.

8:55pm   Hitler’s Lost Soldier - The shattering events of World War II led a German soldier to a life of exile in the United States.

9:50pm   Secrets of the Dead “Bugging Hitler’s Soldiers” – The bugging operation by MI19 that recorded confessions by 4,000 German POW’s is highlighted.

 

June 20
8:00pm   Escape from Iran: The Hollywood Option – The Americans rescued from Iran disguised as Hollywood executives recall the operation.

8:50pm   Ghost Army – A look at US troops who tricked the enemy with sound effects and visual illusions in World War II.

9:50pm   Return to Alcatraz – The prison island of Alcatraz, one of the country’s most mysterious landmarks, is explored.

8:00pm   Battlefield Britain  - Philip of Spain sent the biggest invasion fleet in history against Queen Elizabeth I in what was seen as a religious crusade against England’s Protestant state.

9:00pm   Broadside  ”Emerging Empires Collide, Part 1″
10:00pm  Broadside #102, “Emerging Empires Collide, Part 2″ 
The two-part drama-documentary BROADSIDE tells the story of how the English invasion of Dutch Manhattan sparked the first global naval war.

Special programs for Juneteenth 2013

KLRU presents the new documentary Tomlinson Hill on June 18 at 9 pm and June 24 at 10 pm. Tomlinson Hill documents how the legacy of slavery in East and Central Texas has created a region still divided despite the civil rights changes of the last 60 year.  Learn more about this powerful documentary.

Also new this year is Juneteenth Jamboree: Texas’ African American Heritage on June 13 at 8 pm and June 16 at 1 pm on KLRU. Celebrate the history and rich culture of African Americans in San Marcos, Texas. Juneteenth Jamboree takes you on a tour of Calaboose African American Museum and the historic Dunbar neighborhood. Plus, learn about native son and musician Eddie Durham who provided innovation to the world of jazz. The Gospel Expressions from Texas State University performs “The Black National Anthem.”

KLRU Q will feature a special day of programming on June 15th. First up is the 2013 Juneteenth Parade starting at 10:30 am. KLRU has again partnered with Channel Austin to present the annual Juneteenth parade live.

KLRU Q will also feature the 2010-2013 episodes of Juneteenth Jamboree on June 15 from 12:30 pm to 3 pm. These programs, produced by KLRU, celebrate African-American culture in Central Texas. First is Juneteenth Jamboree: Texas’ African American Heritage at 12:30 pm. That’s followed by:
Juneteenth Jamboree 2012 - Visit the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center and its director/curator Bernadette Phifer. Meet Janel Jefferson, an artist who gets some of her old-school ideas from eBay.
Juneteenth Jamboree 2011 – Dr. Jessica Grogan and Funmi Ogunro.
Juneteenth Jamboree 2010 - explore the notion of freedom.

8:00pm - Frozen North: Sir Hubert’s Forgotten Submarine Expedition
Sir Hubert Wilkins renovated a WWI submarine, enlisted a crew of 20, and planned to make headlines with a daring expedition. The ship was christened “Nautilus,” made famous by Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In the riveting documentary, oceanographer Hans Fricke searches for the wreck of Nautilus. With a wealth of historical footage, modern re-enactments, and the help of a 1:1 steel model of the sub, one of the last polar adventures of our time is brought back to life

8:55pm - Lost and Found: The Legacy of the USS Lagarto
This program recounts the discovery of a WWII US Navy submarine; the first found since the war ended. Missing for more than 60 years, Lagarto and her crew of 86 men vanished during war patrol in the Pacific in 1945.
