It’s Passover, Grover! showcases the Passover story, holiday preparations, and Hebrew words and phrases related to Passover. In the episode, viewers meet families whose holiday traditions originate in Ethiopia and Morocco, providing a glimpse into the diversity of the Jewish people.

KLRU announces the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest! Designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on and active learning, the contest encourages children in grades K-3 to submit their own original illustrated stories.

How the Contest Works
Children in Central Texas can submit their entries to the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest either by mailing their entries to KLRU or uploading their stories to our website: klru.org/writerscontest. The upload window begins March 1, 2013. All entries must be postmarked or uploaded by April 6th. A panel of local judges will select local winners for each grade level by April 20th and award prizes including books, toys and gift cards with an announcement and celebration on Saturday, April 27.

The 1st place local winners from each grade level will then be entered into the national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries!  National winners will be announced during the summer of 2013 and the winning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/writerscontest.

PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest Honorary Judges
A panel of America’s foremost children’s authors, illustrators and content experts will serve as honorary judges for the the contest! The 2013 honorary judges include:

Lisa Henson: As Chief Executive Officer of The Jim Henson Company, Henson serves as an executive producer of Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train, both currently airing daily on PBS KIDS, and Pajanimals, a musical puppet series airing daily on Sprout.

To mark Dr. Seuss’ birthday, on Friday, March 1, at 8:30 am & 2:00 pm, KLRU-TV will premiere two back to back episodes of THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! “Rumbly Tumbly/Planet Name Game.” Nick, Sally, and the rest of the Seussian gang join the Cat as they embark on adventures great and small. From a super-shrunken trip into Thing One’s stomach to learn why our tummies rumble to an epic endeavor in search of the Top of the Sky, both episodes feature the show’s signature whimsy and scientific curiosity.

Four undersea stories packaged together into a one-hour special!

When Buddy and his family want to follow some friends on an undersea fishing trip, the conductor unveils a new invention – the Dinosaur Train Submarine! On its maiden voyage, Otto Ophthalmosaurus guides the sub deep into the ocean using his big eyes that can see in the dark. Then, the family meets Shoshana Shonisaurus, an enormous marine reptile that’s something between a dolphin and a whale, and Maisie Mosasaurus, a huge fast swimming lizard with flippers. Finally, the family watches small eggs hatch on the beach. Baby Archelon turtles emerge and start to swim away. The family follows them on their journey across the ocean where they will grow up to be giant-sized sea turtles!

With the help of Fly, she discovers the perfect rhyme and makes Bear a Valentine song with real heart.

Hugs And Witches: It’s Valentine’s Day, and Hacker captures Doctor Marbles and Lady Ada Lovelace (Jane Curtin), placing them inside a time machine invented by the mathematically-minded Lovelace. The kids and Digit must decipher a series of poems left behind by Lady L, and free them from the time machine before it time travels to the nether world of cyberspace – never to return! Will the kids get there in time, or will Valentine’s Day bring nothing but broken hearts?

Granny’s Intuition – According to the local news Granny May seems to be figuring out who’s been committing the latest crime sprees that are sweeping the city. When Granny May chalks it up to her intuition, WordGirl has a hunch that this villain hasn’t changed her ways.

But there’s only one problem…how exactly do you take care of a pet? Sid heads to school to investigate more, and is delighted to see the special guest. It’s Gabriela’s Mom, Dr. Rosalinda Cordova! She brought the class their very own pet…a praying mantis! And now the kids have to learn how to take care of it. That means investigating what the praying mantis needs to eat, drink, and what kind of home it needs. As Sid quickly discovers, taking care of a pet is a big responsibility!

SLEEP? WHO NEEDS IT?!

Sid is ready to stay up all night so he and his stuffed animals can pretend to fly into space on a rocket ship! When his Mom insists that he can’t stay up, Sid ventures to school to investigate more. He and friends explore how the body needs sleep to properly function, and most important, we need sleep to grow and stay healthy! Understanding that sometimes we feel too excited to sleep (like before an adventure into space), Susie presents a special Super Fab Lab where the kids practice calming down, and preparing their bodies for sleep. Susie lowers the lights, turns off all the sounds in the room, and teaches the kids how to breathe slowly to relax…and sleep!

SEED, THE SCIENCE KID
Wednesday, November 14, 10:30-11 a.m.
At breakfast, Sid discovers seeds in his apple, and decides that seeds really get in the way when you’re trying to eat the apple! This leads Sid to investigate seeds with his friends at the Science Center, where they learn that many living things grow in life cycles. And while many fruits start out as seeds, many animals start out as eggs. The kids investigate frog eggs, butterfly eggs, and chicken eggs, and then see the fully-grown animals they grow into. The kids are elated and empowered with their newfound knowledge about life cycles, and can’t wait to get back to school so they can plant Sid’s apple seed and watch it slowly grow into an apple tree.

THE REASON SID’S SNEEZIN’
Thursday, November 15, 10:30-11 a.m.
Sid wakes up and can’t stop sneezing. He makes his way into the kitchen where he finds his Dad in the middle of a similar sneeze attack. Sid soon discovers that just like his Dad, he might be allergic to pollen! This leads Sid on a mission to learn more about allergies. Mom can think of someone who knows a lot about allergies… Grandma-she’s a nurse! At school, Grandma helps the kids discover that sometimes our bodies can react strongly to something we touch, smell, or eat, so our bodies try to fight it off-and that’s an allergy. Gerald tells everyone that he has a food allergy–he can’t eat strawberries. Wanting to help their friend, Sid, May, and Gabriela decide to make their class a Strawberry-Free-Zone! Gerald is touched, and Susie suggests a special Super Fab Lab survey to discover if other people they know also have allergies.
