As part of this commitment we team up with local arts organizations to bring you television programs like In Context and online arts features on KLRU Collective. We also bring you the best of performance art from PBS with Great Performances and Live from Lincoln Center.

Today, we’re teaming up with Texas Performing Arts to bring you tickets to a live performance of Eighth Blackbird: Slide with Rinde Eckert and Steve Mackey, an evening of unconventional musical theater, on March 23, at 8 p.m. at the McCullough Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at texasperfomingarts.org. Post a comment and you will entered into a drawing to win two tickets to this event. The winner will be chosen at random on March 21st.

Slide is a concert-length music/theater work featuring new-music ensemble eighth blackbird, librettist/actor/singer Rinde Eckert, and composer/performer Steve Mackey. Eckert plays Renard, an enigmatic psychologist who struggles to describe an experiment examining reactions to in- and out-of-focus slides. The results reveal that our decisions are based on habits or conventions that make it difficult for us to see clearly. Mackey and eighth blackbird also take onstage roles, resulting in an unmediated exploration and expression of sound, text, movement, and image.

Slide is directed by Mark DeChiazza, who conceived and directed eighth blackbird’s centennial production of Pierrot Lunaire and previously worked with the ensemble and choreographer Susan Marshall on singing in the dead of night.

This rare tour of Black Watch by the National Theatre of Scotland stops in Austin following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, performances around the globe, and unanimous critical and popular acclaim. For this groundbreaking presentation, Texas Performing Arts is putting the audience on the Bass Concert Hall stage in a rare and intimate seating configuration.

Black Watch is a stirring play based on interviews conducted by Scottish playwright Gregory Burke with veteran soldiers who served in Iraq. Viewed through the eyes of those on the ground, Black Watch reveals what it means to be part of the legendary Scottish regiment, what it means to be part of the war on terror — and what it means to make the journey home again.

Hailed as a cultural landmark of the 21st century, John Tiffany’s production makes powerful and inventive use of movement, music, and song, all to create a visceral, complex, and urgent piece of theatre — compounded by your seat on stage, next to the action.

For millions of fans and followers, Pollan has served as educator, agitator and guide through the act of buying and consuming food.  His most recent books delve deep into where our food comes from, what meaning that food has in our culture and what he believes consumers should know each time they sit down to a meal.

Tuesday live in the studio

Last night KLRU broadcast live from studio 6B during the PBS documentary Botany of Desire. We choose this program because Tuesdays are our traditional science night and also because Michael Pollan will be in Austin next week. As an extra special thank you gift we are offering tickets to his lecture at Bass Concert Hall as well as his book and a DVD or Blu-Ray of the program. We only have a limited number so secure your spot soon! One lucky person will have their tickets upgraded to a VIP reception with Michael Pollan himself.

Another thing that made last night special was the support of the garden community. Central Texas Gardener has many fabulous fans and some of them came to help us answer phones. Many of them have their own blogs or community programs so check their sites listed below if you’re looking for inspiration.

Tonight we will be live in the studio during “A Company of Voices: Conspirare in Concert.” Our special guests will be the Conspirare Youth Choir who will be performing throughout the evening. The fun begins at 7p!

Bill Bradley tapes Overheard 12/9

Bill Bradley will tape Overheard with Evan Smith on December 9 at 10 am. We are offering those who donate during PBS Newshour tonight and tomorrow the opportunity to have reserved seats in the front section for this taping. Bill Bradley’s biography includes three terms as a U.S. Senator, a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2000, an NBA hall of fame basketball career and two years in Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.
