This summer, just by visiting SoarwithReading.com, thousands of Americans are placing age-appropriate books in the hands of children who need them, through one simple yet powerful action: sharing the name of their favorite children’s book. Soar with Reading, now in its second year, is a partnership between JetBlue Airways’ (Nasdaq: JBLU) and PBS KIDS. The program is setting the stage for back-to-school reading success through book donations, and free resources for families including an interactive reading list, reading tips and expert advice for keeping kids engaged in literature.
For every title shared on the website, JetBlue is donating an age-appropriate book to a deserving child through partner Barefoot Books. Book donations in the Austin-area have been awarded to Escuelita del Alma in partnership with KLRU-TV. Similar donations are being made to local literacy-focused organizations identified in partnership with PBS member stations in the 71 cities that JetBlue currently serves.
KLRU is excited to announce the following changes to our schedule for children’s programs, to begin September 3:
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is a new show from the Fred Rogers Institute (Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.) Daniel is the grandson of the original Daniel Tiger, and many other relatives from the original show are present in the Land of Make Believe. The show focuses on Daniel’s communications with friends and family, especially when things don’t work out the way he wants them to! [Monday-Friday, 10am and repeats Monday-Friday, 12:30pm and Sundays at 8am.]
We will have lots more Math and Science content during the after-school times, including new episodes from Cyberchase [Monday-Friday at 1:30-pm], SciGirls [Friday at 4:30pm], and the Wild Kratts [Monday-Friday at 4pm]!
Signing Time will run Monday through Friday at 1pm to help infants and toddlers communicate with caregivers.

PBS Parents has recently launched a new website with Whole Foods called Fantastic Organic where you can find collected tips, ideas, recipes, videos and games to encourage you and your family to explore organic produce and foods.
KLRU is joining in the fun, too! Saturday, August 25, the new Whole Foods Market at Arbor Trails in South Austin will have a fun run, an in-store organic scavenger hunt, and our very own Biscuit Brothers! The events start at 8:00 am with the fun run at 8:00 am, then yoga at 10:00 am. The Biscuits take the stage at noon as the scavenger hunt commences. While there, pick up a schedule of our fall PBS Kids lineup, including the debut of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and consider the KLRU Explorers family membership!
This month, KLRU has been re-airing the original broadcast of Sesame Street’s one-hour special “Growing Hope Against Hunger.” In this show, guest stars Brad and Kimberly Paisley meet Lily, the newest Muppet. Together, they reach out to viewers who may be hungry and those who may be in a position to help others. At the conclusion of the episode, viewers of all ages who may need additional food are directed to call 2-1-1, the call center for local health and human services.
“Growing Hope Against Hunger” will air four more times this month:
- Monday, August 20th at 1:00 pm
- Wednesday, August 22nd at 12 noon
- Friday, August 24th at 12 noon
- Tuesday, August 28th at 12:30 pm
