Cokie Roberts is a best-selling author, a contributor to NPR’s Morning Edition, and a Political Commentator for ABC News. Cokie co-anchored ABC’s This Week with Sam Donaldson from 1996-2002. She’s won numerous awards, including three Emmys, and was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. Her new book, Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, 1848-1868, was published in April. She’s in Austin to speak and sign copies at BookPeople at 7pm.

Former Congressman Barney Frank represented the Fourth District of Massachusetts for more than three decades. Frank is known as one of the most prominent gay politicians in American history and was the first sitting member of Congress to enter a same-sex marriage. In 2010 he co-authored Dodd-Frank, the most far-reaching Wall Street reform bill since the Great Depression. His memoir Frank: A Life in Politics from the Great Society to Same-Sex Marriagewas recently published. Congressman Frank is in Austin to speak and sign copies at BookPeople immediately following our taping.

BernieSandersSenator Bernie Sanders is the junior senator from Vermont. He was re-elected to his second term in 2012. Sanders is the longest-serving Congressional Independent in US history. Before joining the Senate he served 16 years in the House representing Vermont’s at-large district. Senator Sanders identifies himself as a Democratic Socialist and is a champion of progressive causes. In 2014 he told The Nation he’s “prepared to run” for president in 2016.

Screening: Children of Giant 4/2

Join KLRU, the Emma Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and Latino Public Broadcasting for a preview screening of Hector Galan’s new film Children of Giant.

Galan will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A about the film. In 1955, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean and a massive crew descended on the Texas town of Marfa to begin production on Giant. Now, 60 years later, “Children of Giant” explores the film’s still timely examination of racial prejudice. This film will air as part of the Voces series on PBS stations nationwide. Alex GibneyAlex Gibney is an Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. He won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2008 for his film Taxi to the Dark Side. He received another Academy Award nomination in 2006 for Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, which also won the Independent Spirit Award and the WGA Award. Alex’s film Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief will air on HBO on March 29th. Based on Lawrence Wright’s book by the same name, the film was one of the most talked about at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Alex’s other new film, Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, is premiering at SXSW.

unnamed (3)Salman Khan is the founder of Khan Academy, a non-profit providing online instruction to people all over the world. Sal founded Khan Academy in 2008. He began by tutoring his cousins remotely by video. The videos attracted a large YouTube following. Today, Khan Academy is an online learning platform which includes practice exercises, instructional videos, analytics and teacher tools. It has over 15 million registered users in over 190 countries and is available in around 28 languages. Sal Khan is the closing speaker at SXSWedu 2015.

unnamed (1)Kim Gordon is a founding member of Sonic Youth and author of the memoir Girl in a Band, which hits book sellers tomorrow. The memoir, which is already topping a number of must-read lists, chronicles her childhood in California, her time in New York in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and the rise of Sonic Youth. In addition to being a musician and author, Gordon is a fashion designer, actress and artist. She is in Austin to sign books and discuss Girl in a Band with Austin City Limits’ Terry Lickona at BookPeople on Friday, February 27. BookPeople will be selling any remaining autographed copies of the book at our taping.

Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective and a biographer’s passion. The series artfully weaves three different films in one: a riveting historical documentary; an engrossing and intimate vérité film; and a scientific and investigative report. The event will feature a half-hour segment from the six-hour documentary, along with a panel discussion of leading cancer experts from Texas.
