KLRU is excited to announce a new addition to KLRU Q’s 11pm music block, Hardly Sound. The documentary series focuses on Texas underground music and artists but goes beyond the recording studio to tell the story of the band members with insight into the creative process.

Summer Arts Festival presents Great Performances: Tanglewood 8/10

KLRU expands the scope and diversity of the arts on television with a special presentation of Great Performances: Tanglewood as part of the PBS Summer Arts Festival. Located in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, Tanglewood is one of the world’s most beloved music festivals. The performance will feature appearances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the Boston Pops, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra — led by conductors John Williams, Keith Lockhart and Andris Nelsons — and iconic Tanglewood artists Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Peter Serkin and James Taylor. The wide-ranging program, which will be taped on July 14, will include Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”; Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town; selections from the Great American Songbook; Franz Joseph Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D, 2nd and 3rd movements; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Andante cantabile for cello and strings; Pablo de Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, for violin and orchestra; Maurice Ravel’s “La Valse”; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy.

The Festival explores international arts, including a historic concert by four Cuban music greats and a journey into Islamic art narrated by acclaimed actress Susan Sarandon. Miró Quartet with Jorge Caballero in concert

Can’t get enough classical music in your life?

KLRU will be rebroadcasting Arts In Context: Jorge Caballero on August 2 at 7 pm. The episode features Peruvian classical guitarist Caballero, along with the Miró Quartet and the Classical Guitar Orchestra, performing their Modest Mussorgsky’s masterpiece suite “Pictures At An Exhibition” entitled “Austin Pictures.”

Caballero is the youngest musician and only guitarist to win the Naumberg International Competition, an award comparable to the Pulitzer, but for musicians. The Miró Quartet are currently the Faculty String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Texas at Austin and one of America’s most important chamber music groups. The episode is an incredible showcase of impressive talent and musicianship and is not to be missed.

Jorge Caballero and the Miró Quartet will be performing perform live on Saturday, August 4th, at Dell Hall at The Long Center for the Performing Arts. They will reunite to perform a program of Mozart, Paganini, Bach, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Not only will you be captivated by the music, but the Alamo Drafthouse’s Beverage Manager, Bill Norris, will be concocting splendid cocktails – one for each member of the performing ensemble – in the Kodosky Lounge, beginning at 6 pm. KLRU expands the scope and diversity of the arts on television with a special presentation of Homecoming: Kansas City Symphony as part of the PBS Summer Arts Festival. Barnes Collection follows Dr. Albert Barnes’ remarkable rise from Philadelphia’s working-class neighborhood to the top of the modern art world. This unique tale bounces back and forth through time as the late Dr. Barnes travels the world to collect works of art by some of history’s most famous artists — Picasso, Cezanne, Matisse, Renoir and many others. The film digs deep into the intricacies of each painting, offering a rare look at the priceless collection and the new Philadelphia museum that houses it.

Barnes Collection is part of the PSB Summer Arts Festival and each week KLRU will present a local story to accompany the PBS program. Stay tuned after Barnes Collection for a look at Ben Rubin’s installation And That’s the Way It Is. The installation projects an interwoven grid of text from televised news broadcasts, translating the spoken language of televised evening news into written fragments.

KLRU expands the scope and diversity of the arts on television with a special presentation of Mariachi High as part of the PBS Summer Arts Festival. Feel the soul and energy of African-Cuban drummers, guajira guitarists and the pulsing melodies of celebrated Cuban musician Raul Paz, who brings together fellow musical stars Descemer Bueno, Kelvis Ochoa and David Torrens for a concert in Havana. All of them left Cuba years ago; their decision to return has injected a new spirit into Cuban music. Mirroring Cuba’s growing relationship with the world, HAVANA, HAVANA! highlights the evolution of the country’s musical expression in the 21st century.

HAVANA, HAVANA! is part of the PBS Summer Arts Festival and each week KLRU will present a local story to accompany the PBS program. Stay tuned after HAVANA, HAVANA! for The Austin Samba School. The Austin Samba School brings the music, dance, and culture of Carnival in Rio to Austin. Each year, the Samba School develops a theme and builds a show to present at Austin’s annual Carnival Brasileiro.

Texas music history explored on Arts In Context 7/26

Texas music legends, including Will Sexton, Denny Freeman, Jimmie Vaughan and Billy F. Gibbons, talk about songwriter Bill Carter on KLRU’s Arts In Context.

Bill Carter and his wife Ruth Ellsworth have written some of the biggest hits by The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan. In addition to writing songs, Bill Carter & The Blame is a Texas supergroup with a rotating all-star lineup that has been performing Bill and Ruth’s songs for decades. Arts In Context combines Bill Carter & The Blame footage from a 2012 live performance in KLRU’s legendary Studio 6A with interviews of Bill, Ruth and a wide selection of the musicians and people they have worked with over the years.

Airing on KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, July 26 at 7:30 pm and July 29 at 1 pm, this episode features interviews with or appearances by Will Sexton, Denny Freeman, Dony Wynn, Johnny Depp, Jimmie Vaughan, Billy F. Gibbons, Chris Layton, Charlie Sexton, Cindy Cashdollar, Glover Gill, Andy Salmon, David Holt, Susan Antone, Wayne Nagel and Andy Langer.

KLRU expands the scope and diversity of the arts on television with a special presentation of Homecoming: Kansas City Symphony as part of the PBS Summer Arts Festival. Architect Moshe Safdie’s extraordinary new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts provides the stunning backdrop for a performance-documentary that profiles the Grammy Award-winning Kansas City Symphony, their vibrant artistic director and conductor Michael Stern, and the radiant, celebrated mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. A concert wrapped by documentary narratives, this special tracks DiDonato’s nostalgic return to her hometown — and her thrilling Kauffman Center debut — after a triumphant appearance with Plácido Domingo at The Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Homecoming: Kansas City Symphony is part of the PSB Summer Arts Festival and each week KLRU will present a local story to accompany the PBS program. Stay tuned after Homecoming: Kansas City Symphony for a look at Forklift Danceworks’ Solo Symphony. Using a 13-piece live ensemble, Solo Symphony tells the story of conductor Peter Bay. With original choreography and music, the performance explores the movement of conducting in both true-to-life and abstract ways.
