KLRU Q - Night at the Movies

KLRU-Q’s Saturday Night at the Movies presents a full-length feature film every Saturday night, plus extra content that gives the evening an exciting spin. Each film explores the work of legendary actors and actresses through many important films from their careers. Here is a peek of what this Saturday has in store:

7:00 – Just Seen It Episode #107
John McClane, Bad Medicine and Witches: Bruce Willis returns as John McClane in A Good Day To Die Hard, Steven Soderbergh’s suspense thriller, Side Effects, and the bewitching teen romance drama Beautiful Creatures plus our DVD pick of the week.

7:30 – On Story  Academy Award Winners 
Academy Award winning films are discussed by the creative minds behind APOLLO 13, SCHINDLER’S LIST, and A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Featuring Ron Howard and Steve Zaillian.

8:00 pm – Hollywood Stars Film Package Suspicion
Alfred Hitchcock directed this thriller about a woman (Joan Fontaine) who suspects that her husband (Cedric Hardwicke) is plotting to murder her. Cast: Cary Grant, Joan Fontaine, Nigel Bruce, May Whitty, Cedric Hardwicke, Leo G. Carroll.

9:45 - Cary Grant: The Leading Man
With a winning combination of comic style and leading-man charisma, Cary Grant was the essence of a star. But the suave exterior concealed a complex individual. Family photos, archival footage and film clips vividly convey Grant’s journey from lonely working-class beginnings to the peak of Hollywood royalty. The episode includes his first starring role in She Done Him Wrong and his discovery by Mae West.

The weather is getting warmer and everything is emerging from winter’s deep freeze. Whether you celebrate Passover or Easter, Burt Wolf will be in the mix of the festivities. P. Allen Smith has flowers, flowers more flowers and food straight from the garden to usher in spring. Join Katie Brown as she prepares an unforgettable spring bunch. Spring has sprung!

New York State of Mind
New York, New York – a city so nice, they had to name it twice! Take a tour of the city that never sleeps. Chef Joe Ciminera, host of Taste This, takes us to eat all around the city he loves and shows us why New York is a true melting pot of cultures. We taste all things Italian in the concrete jungle with Chef Lidia Bastianich. Finish your tour with a history lesson from world traveler Burt Wolf. After this marathon, you’re certain to be in a New York State of Mind.

Albert King With Stevie Ray Vaughan In Session at 10:30 pm Tuesday and 10:30 pm Saturday presents the famed live jam session by two of the greatest musicians ever to have played the blues on electric guitar – Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Nature at 7 pm Wednesday investigates the most unlikely cross-species relationships imaginable, why animals form special bonds, and what these relationships suggest about the nature of animal emotions on  Animal Odd Couples.

Joe Bonamassa: An Acoustic Evening At The Vienna Opera at 7 pm Saturday presents Joe Bonamassa’s exclusive acoustic presentation at the Vienna Opera House, a sublime cultural iconic venue steeped in history and heritage, which is the perfect backdrop for such a dramatic and original music presentation.

PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest 2013

Writers Contest

KLRU announces the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest! Designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on and active learning, the contest encourages children in grades K-3 to submit their own original illustrated stories.

How the Contest Works
Children in Central Texas can submit their entries to the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest either by mailing their entries to KLRU or uploading their stories to our website: klru.org/writerscontest. The upload window begins March 1, 2013. All entries must be postmarked or uploaded by April 6th. A panel of local judges will select local winners for each grade level by April 20th and award prizes including books, toys and gift cards with an announcement and celebration on Saturday, April 27.

KLRU Q Night at the Movies spotlights a classic film on select Saturday nights. This month’s feature films will be:

3/2 - Suspicion
At 8 pm, Alfred Hitchcock directed this thriller about a woman (Joan Fontaine) who suspects that her husband (Cedric Hardwicke) is plotting to murder her. Cast: Cary Grant, Joan Fontaine, Nigel Bruce, May Whitty, Cedric Hardwicke, Leo G. Carroll.

3/9 - Top Hat
At 9 pm, Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers) is attracted to dancer (Fred Astaire) but in a case of mistaken identity believes he is her best friend’s husband. Cast: Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Edward Everett Horton, Lucille Ball.

3/16 - Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him?)
At 7:30 pm, this is a documentary with that wonderful haunting Nilsson music throughout, including his performance of Everybody’s Talking About Me from the film Midnight Cowboy. He was the musician’s songwriter – universally loved for his talent and smooth rich voice. His story is told here in a tightly edited hour allowing for a much longer version to be available on the DVD. Jimmy Webb, who knew Nilsson, joined us in the pledge breaks.

3/23 – The Spirit Of St. Louis 
At 8 pm, Charles Lindbergh (James Stewart) attempts to become the first man to fly nonstop across the Atlantic to Paris in 1927. Cast: James Stewart, Patricia Smith, Murray Hamilton.

3/30 – Eight Men Out
At 8 pm, disgruntled Chicago White Sox players stand trial for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series for mobster Arnold Rothstein. Cast: John Cusack, Clifton James, Michael Lerner.

 

Katherine Craft – Women and Girls Lead

KLRU presents eight stories about women and girls who are making a difference both locally and globally. These women were nominated by the community to be featured as part of the station’s participation in the national Women and Girls Lead campaign. Today we spotlight Katherine Craft. Craft is the founder of Conspire Theater, a program that provides incarcerated women a healing and empowering experience through the arts.

Julieta Garibay – Women and Girls Lead

KLRU presents eight stories about women and girls who are making a difference both locally and globally. These women were nominated by the community to be featured as part of the station’s participation in the national Women and Girls Lead campaign. Today we spotlight Julieta Garibay. Garibay co-founded the Undergraduate Leadership Initiative, an advocacy group comprised of fellow undocumented college students, supporters, and family.

Kelsey created The Afghan Women’s Project to share stories of Afghan women to help change stereotypes.

Ndeye Boury Silla – Women and Girls Lead

KLRU presents eight stories about women and girls who are making a difference both locally and globally. These women were nominated by the community to be featured as part of the station’s participation in the national Women and Girls Lead campaign. Today we spotlight Ndeye Boury Silla. Silla is one of our community’s outstanding teenagers. The daughter of Senegalese immigrants, she raised more than $900 to purchase school supplies for children in her parent’s native country.

We review three very different movies – the new comedy Identity Thief, starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, Sylvester Stallone’s new action thriller in Bullet To The Head, and the documentary about Shin Bet, Israel’s clandestine security agency – The Gatekeepers.

8:00 – Bedazzled
A short-order cook (Dudley Moore) with a crush on a waitress (Eleanor Bron) makes a deal with the devil (Peter Cook). Cast: Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Eleanor Bron.

9:46 – Smothered: The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour
Examines the turmoil that surrounded the late-1960s variety show, including the events that led to its cancellation. With a young and brash stable of writers and performers, including Steve Martin and Rob Reiner, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour brought an edgy new brand of political comedy to the airwaves for three seasons. When they were fired in 1969, brothers Tom and Dick Smothers took on their network, CBS, in the courts for a landmark lawsuit. . .and won. This is the fascinating true story as told by its key players, including the Smothers Brothers, show writers Rob Reiner and Mason William, performers Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and Harry Belafonte, and former CBS executives.
