Brains & Gangsters on KLRU Q 11/24

Here’s a quick look at what’s happening Monday, November 24, on KLRU-Q:

8 pm:

Jimmy Moran is found guilty of badly injuring a woman during a robbery. In the sentencing phase of the trial, Judge Rakoff hears arguments from the court-appointed psychiatrist, the attorneys, the victim’s husband and Jimmy himself. Meanwhile, Alan Alda discovers how neuroscience is already influencing the sentencing of defendants – especially young defendants – by revealing how the immature teenage brain is vulnerable to foolish and impulsive acts. Before Judge Rakoff pronounces Jimmy’s sentence, Alda meets a judge who has volunteered to have his own brain probed as he makes sentencing decisions. This episode of Brains on Trial with Alan Alda focuses on the sentence phase of Moran’s trial. We investigate Moran’s brain and look into what factors could have played into pulling the trigger.

9 pm:

The mention of Al Capone’s name sparks images of pinstripe suits and ruthless murders. More than 80 years after the height of his power, Al Capone: Icon explores Capone’s enduring impact on American culture and learn why people are still so fascinated by this celebrity gangster.

10 pm:

The prison island of Alcatraz is one of the country’s most complicated, terrifying and mysterious landmarks. “The Rock” was the notorious spot where the government put “the worst of the worst” prisoners, infamous criminals such as Machine Gun Kelly and Al Capone. Although it was closed in 1963, the island still holds the public’s imagination, becoming the destination site for thousands of tourists and the setting for feature films (The Rock, Escape from Alcatraz) and television series (Alcatraz). Return to Alcatraz is a wide-ranging documentary that traces the roots of the “Battle of Alcatraz” in 1946 – when the military was called in to crush a prison riot – as well as portraits of those who served time there. The program reveals the compelling story of convicted atomic spy Morton Sobell; the true, frightening tale of Robert Stroud – the “Birdman of Alcatraz”; and the real-life account of the 1962 “Escape from Alcatraz.”

KLRU Q is broadcast channel 18.3. It is also available to digital cable subscribers of Grande on 284 and Time Warner on 20.
