Operas coming to KLRU this January

Premiering on KLRU this January  and February are three renowned operas that tell classic stories with incredible performances.

Here are the upcoming operas:
Live from Lincoln Center “Richard Tucker Opera” Gala” airs January 12 at 1:30 pm
The Richard Tucker Gala, honoring the legacy of the beloved American tenor, is a perennial highlight of the opera season. The 2013 Gala celebrates the centennial of Tucker’s birth with performances of arias and ensembles featuring many of the world’s greatest voices, including past Richard Tucker Award winners Renee Fleming, Joyce DiDonato and Susan Graham, and this year’s winner, rising Metropolitan Opera star Isabel Leonard.

Great Performances at the Met Eugene Onegin” airs January 19 at 1:30 pm
“Eugene Onegin” premieres the Metropolitan Opera season.  Anna Netrebko and Mariusz Kwiecien star as the lovestruck Tatiana and the imperious Onegin in Tchaikovsky’s fateful romance. Deborah Warner’s new production, directed by Fiona Shaw, is set in the late 19th century and moves episodically from farmhouse to ballroom, with a powerful snowstorm providing the dramatic setting for the finale. Piotr Beczala is Lenski, Onegin’s friend turned rival.

Great Performances at the Met The Nose” airs February 23 at 1:30 pm
William Kentridge’s innovative production of Shostakovich’s shocking, unconventional opera about a beleaguered Russian official and his runaway nose returns to the Met for the first time since its sold-out 2010 premiere. Pavel Smelkov conducts a cast led by Paulo Szot as the hapless Kovalyov with Andrey Popov as the menacing Police Inspector and Alexander Lewis as Kovalyov’s peripatetic nose.
