Final Hours: Amelia Earhart’s Last Flight at 6:00pm
This powerful documentary recreates the final flight of Amelia Earhart, the noted aviation pioneer whose historic 1937 trip around the world ended in her tragic disappearance – shot in 19 countries and based on “World Flight 1997,” Texas aviator Linda Finch’s honorary recreation of Earhart’s planned flight. With the rare accreditation of the Smithsonian Institution, this informative program presents footage of Finch’s flight, artfully intercut with archival footage and interviews with Earhart. Notably different from other Amelia Earhart films, this program also presents theories as to what actually occurred during the deadly flight.
Secrets of the Dead #1102, “Lost in the Amazon” at 7:00pm
This program is a modern day quest to find the truth behind one of exploration’s greatest mysteries: what happened to famed adventurer Col. Percy Fawcett, who went looking for a city of gold — the Lost City of “Z” — in the Amazon in 1925 and disappeared in the jungles of Brazil forever? New archaeological digs, the science behind the discovery of “newly found” jungle cities and clues collected over the years reveal the fate of Fawcett. The program unravels the truth of what really happened to Fawcett and shares surprising finds that are causing experts to re-think the image of a pristine uninhabited Amazon rainforest: a place that before Columbus, may have had large populations living in sophisticated towns and cities.
Glacier Park’s Night of the Grizzlies at 8:00pm
On the night of August 12, 1967, grizzly bears in Glacier National Park killed two
young women and severely mauled one man. For everyone involved, it remains an unforgettable night of crisis, intense fear, bravery and, ultimately, grief. This dramatic and tragic story, and how it eventually influenced the fate of the grizzly bear in the continental United States, takes center stage in this historical documentary. Archival material, photographs, re-creations and gripping on-camera interviews with survivors, witnesses, family members journalists and biologists, provide a complete account of those events. Veteran film and television actor J.K. Simmons (Law and Order, Juno, Up in the Air, The Closer) narrates.
Touching the Void at 9:30pm
Based on the international best-seller by renowned climber Joe Simpson, this film recounts the extraordinary story of a climb Simpson and his climbing partner, Simon Yates, undertook in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. The two ambitious young mountaineers set off to scale the hitherto unclimbed west face of Siula Grande, a remote and treacherous 21,000-foot peak. Starting their descent through a blizzard, Simpson fell and shattered his leg, launching a heroic battle for survival in which both men were faced with life-or-death decisions that tested the human spirit to its limit.
