Highlights: June 3-9

Their European immigrant ancestors blazed unconventional trails in America, from capturing British ships for the American Revolution to crossing racial barriers in slave-era Louisiana.  Finding Your Roots at 7 pm Sunday traces the turbulent and contradictory history of the city of New Orleans through the family stories of Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis.

On Masterpiece Mystery! Presents: Zen at 8 pm Sunday, Detective Aurelio Zen (Rufus Sewell) brings justice to modern-day Italy, whether the authorities want it or not. In this episode, a killer is on a vendetta-fuelled rampage against those who wrongly imprisoned him.

Wine Roads of Texas at 7 pm Tuesday takes viewers through the back roads of the Texas Hill Country with stops at Becker Vineyards, Flat Creek Estates, Alamosa Vineyards, and Fall Creek Vineyards. Following at 7:30 pm, viewers will go to West Texas to discover where the modern Texas wine industry was born. Then at 8 pm, explore the sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast to the busy “Metroplex” of Dallas-Fort Worth visiting Messina Hof Winery, Haak Vineyards, Homestead Winery, and Crossroads Winery.

Painted Churches of Texas: Echoes Of The Homeland at 8:30 pm Tuesday tells the story of a people striving to succeed in a new country and still preserve the values and culture of their homelands.

Las Misiones: The Missions of Texas at 9:30 pm Tuesday is a visual celebration of the structures as historic monuments, religious symbols, and important centers of community and fellowship.

Nature at 7 pm Wednesday captures footage of hummingbirds in the wild combined with high-tech presentations of their remarkable abilities to help us understand their world as we never have before.

Lonesome George and The Battle for the Galapagos Islands at 8:30 pm Wednesday focuses on the struggle going on to restore the islands’ unique biodiversity.

Austin City Limits at 10 pm Tuesday welcomes the cream of underground rock with The National and Band of Horses. The National plays songs from its acclaimed record High Violet, while Band of Horses highlights its latest LP Infinite Arms.

As a teenager growing up in Baltimore in the 1970s, Kevin Clash had very different aspirations from those of his classmates — he wanted to be a puppeteer, part of Jim Henson’s team, the creative force responsible for delivering the magic of Sesame Street.  Combining archival footage with material from the present day, Independent Lens “Being Elmo” at 7 pm Thursday explores Clash’s story in vivid detail and chronicles the meteoric rise of Jim Henson in the process. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg and including interviews with Frank Oz, Rosie O’Donnell, Cheryl Henson, Joan Ganz Cooney and others.

Every summer the Austin Lyric Opera organizes “Opera Odyssey”, an opera camp with kids ages 8 to 12. Students produce their own original musical work, design and build sets and costumes, and learn the business of opera. Arts in Context at 9 pm Thursday followed their journey through the creative process which resulted in the original production “The Quarantine.”
