KLRU is working in partnership with the Austin American-Statesman, San Antonio Express-News, Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Dallas Morning News to present a debate among the leading candidates for governor.
Candidates who register at least 10 percent support in a September poll conducted by the newspapers will be invited to attend this debate.
We appreciate our viewers’ concerns about having all candidates invited to participate in the debate. If you would like to voice your concerns please do so in the comments section of this post and we will pass comments along to the news organizations with whom we are working.

Has a poll format and date been decided yet? Will this be an online or phone poll? Will there be limitations to voting if done online?
Comment by Robb Denmark — September 13, 2010 @ 11:55 am
Why this arbitrary 10% requirement? Kathie Glass is a popular candidate with a message that is appealing to a lot of Texans.
Public Television should be working for the people of Texas who want to hear from their candidates, and should not be positioning itself as a supporter of the major political parties.

Why was Andy Barron, write in candidate not included in the poll? How can you call it a debate if ALL candidates are not invited??? That doesn’t sound right to me.. I guess that’s what happens when you have a liberal media

why has andy barron, write in candidate not been invited? why was his name not included in the poll. How can you call it a debate if not all candidates are invited
Comment by sue ann — October 7, 2010 @ 9:58 pm
The debate sponsors changed the criteria from 10% to 1% – why have you not issued an invitation to Dr. Andy Barron – he has 2% of the vote?!?!?!?!?! Please uphold your promise to invite ALL the candidates who meet the criteria set by the sponsors. Below is a link to the independent scientific study conducted by SurveyUSA which states that Dr. Andy Barron has 2% statewide support & the fact that 5 to 1 Texans want to see ALL the candidates at the debate, regardless of voting preference.

The poll that the newspapers used did not even have Andy’s name on it, nor was it about the debate. Hardly an unbiased standard for sure!
Comment by Jennifer — October 15, 2010 @ 9:20 am
Could you please include Andy Barron? I think it only fair that all candidates meeting the requirements are invited. He definately qualifies and the people of Texas need to hear all candidates to get a clear view of who they will be voting for. Thank you.
Comment by Mindee W — October 15, 2010 @ 10:41 am
Andy Barron not only met, but exceeded, the criteria you set for inclusion in the debate, yet you have not invited him. What gives? How can this be a real debate if you ignore candidates?

Why was Andy Barron, write in candidate not included in the poll? How can you call it a debate if ALL candidates are not invited??? That doesn’t sound right to me.. I guess that’s what happens when you have a liberal media. There is a 1% requirement which he met with 2% from my understand…so I am not sure why equal representation by the media is not supported.

KLRU you do a great work. However, I am concerned that all the candidates have not been invited. You posted that they have to have a 10% support, however I was reading where it was stated that a candidate only needs 1% support. The other concern I have is that this “poll” that was taken to determine this so-called support for the candidates, did NOT even include Dr. Andy Barron’s name on it.
Dr. Barron is garnering more and more support each day. In fact, in another recent poll taken by a station in Central Texas showed he had 20% support! Another one placed him with over 40%.
Either way, he has exceeded the 1% criteria laid out to receive the invite.
I understand that each of the papers (the sponsors of this debate) have their own favorite candidate. But it is appalling to all Texans to call this a “debate” when all potential winners are not invited. What would it hurt?
It only helps Texas to hear ALL the ideas and perspectives on how to lead this great state. INVITE ANDY BARRON AND ALL THE OTHER CANDIDATES TO PARTICIPATE!!!!
Comment by Matt — October 15, 2010 @ 11:14 am
Andy Barron, write in candidate, should be included in the debate! He has exceeded the requirements and leaving him out is an outrage. This is truly a very unfair approach to what they are attempting to protray as a fair running??? Bell County is behind Andy Barron and want him included in all areas of this campaign so that all Texans have the opportunity to hear what Andy Barron has to say in his request for representing our great state of Texas in position of governor.

Please include Andy Barron in the debate for Governor. The people of Texas want to hear from all candidates.
Comment by Lisa — October 15, 2010 @ 12:33 pm
Please invite Dr. Andy Barron to the debate. I (among many others I know) would like to see him included in this debate, and would like to hear his responses to the questions in a debate setting.
Comment by Julie — October 15, 2010 @ 12:44 pm
Andy Barron
Comment by Teri — October 15, 2010 @ 1:34 pm
I want to request that you invite Andy Barron to the debate, as he has exceeded the 1% criteria set by the debate sponsors. If anyone hasn’t read up on him, you need too. Please pass along and let’s try to get him to the debate.
Comment by Kristine — October 15, 2010 @ 2:13 pm
Please invite Andy Barron to the debate. Texans deserve to hear from all canidates.
Comment by Marianne — October 15, 2010 @ 2:29 pm
I want to know why write-in candidate Andy Barron has not been invited. He has exceeded the 10% and met all requirements!
Comment by T — October 15, 2010 @ 2:42 pm
I would really like to see Andy Barron, write in candidate with 2% support, be included in this debate. There is at least one candidate, if not more, with less support than Dr. Barron. Why has he not been extended an invitation?
Comment by Amanda Duggan — October 15, 2010 @ 2:46 pm
Please allow Andy Barron, write-in candidate, to participate in the debate as he has met all the requirements established for this debate. It’s not a REAL debate if ALL the candidates aren’t allowed to participate. Thank you!
Comment by Jenny — October 15, 2010 @ 3:31 pm
Just wondered why Andy Barron was not invited to particpate in the gubanatorial debate. He gathered the 1% of voters required for the invitation.
Comment by Debbie Wade — October 15, 2010 @ 3:39 pm
Please include Andy Barron in the debate and include him the the polls.
Comment by Dorinda Crunp — October 15, 2010 @ 3:51 pm
I request that you issue Andy an invitation since he has met the requirements (and even exceeded them by gaining 2% statewide support).
Excluding Andy from the debate, despite him having 2% statewide support (double the requirement set by debate sponsors) is simply wrong.
Thank you,
Comment by Tonya Miller — October 15, 2010 @ 4:40 pm
It’s hard for voters to make an informed decision if they aren’t given a chance to hear all the candidates. Voters deserve to have the opportunity to hear both Kathie Glass & Andy Barron.
Comment by chris — October 15, 2010 @ 4:45 pm
I want to see Andy Barron in the debate. I like what I have read but want to hear what he has to say. Please include him in the debate
Comment by Retta Kasper — October 15, 2010 @ 5:37 pm
I think Sue Ann summed that up.
Comment by Holly — October 15, 2010 @ 7:23 pm
I was wondering why a candidate for governor of Texas is not being allowed to participate in your debate?
Comment by James McGwier — October 15, 2010 @ 8:34 pm
Polls show Andy Barron has more than 2 percent of the vote. He should be included in the poll and the debate.
Comment by Anne — October 16, 2010 @ 12:29 am
Please invite Andy Barron into the debate. I would like to hear more from him.
Comment by A. Graff — October 16, 2010 @ 1:22 am
These are the five candidate that need to be invited to the debate.
1.Rick Perry
2.Bill White
3.Andy Barron
4.Kathie Glass
5.Deb Shafto
Comment by Dylan — October 16, 2010 @ 2:48 am
You could probaly leave Deb Shafto out of the debate since she can’t make 1 percent in any polls
Comment by Dylan — October 16, 2010 @ 2:50 am
I think you should invite Andy Barron to the debate. Otherwise, you lose your reputation of honoring your commitments. You lowered the requirements to 1%, but Andy met a 2% requirement. I think you should honor your commitment and let the public decide whose ideas and plans should be heard.
Comment by Iris Williams — October 16, 2010 @ 7:50 am
The citizens of the state of Texas deserve a real debate with ALL of the candidates – that includes Dr. Andy Barron. Please reconsider your decision and allow the voice of this candidate to be heard. Let the voters decide! Isn’t that what a democracy is?
Comment by Beverly — October 16, 2010 @ 9:18 am
Andy Barron must scare ya’ll a lot!
Comment by Sheryl Rogers — October 16, 2010 @ 11:28 pm
Only whites allowed in the debate or what? Andy Barron!
Comment by Richard Ramirez — October 16, 2010 @ 11:30 pm
I am requesting that you invite ALL candidates as well. We should as voters have the opportunity to hear from ALL running in this election and you, as the media, have the responsibility to allow us to hear from all the candidates, including write-in candidate, Andy Barron.
Comment by ash — October 17, 2010 @ 12:27 pm
Also, it’s not right that the newspapers should change their requirement to 10% NOW, only after other candidates reached their previous set requirement of 1%, because they do not want to have to include all candidates. They are trying to get around doing what they know to be right, based on their own previous set rules. Our newspapers should do better than this for us.
Comment by ash — October 17, 2010 @ 12:35 pm
My mistake, I apologize. I completely misunderstood. The requirements used to be 10% but are now 1%, so the papers have not changed this. But I do still hope all candidates are invited to the debate.
Comment by ash — October 17, 2010 @ 1:33 pm
Requesting Andy Barron to be invited to the debate.
Comment by Farrah Ogle — October 18, 2010 @ 8:40 am
Many have asked why Andy Barron is omitted from the debate. Why is no one answering this?
Comment by Richard DeNoyer — October 18, 2010 @ 10:31 am
I’m sure Texas wants to hear from all the Gubernatorial Candidates. If Bill White has no problem debating the Libertarian or Green Party Candidate, then perhaps for the sake of being fair the Write-In Candidate Dr. Andy Barron should be invited as well if you all want to keep what little credibility you have left. Otherwise, there might be a lawsuit on your hands.
Comment by Nathan — October 18, 2010 @ 12:01 pm
I would like to respectfully request that Dr Andy Barron be included in the gubernatorial debate. Thank you.
Comment by Richard Overall — October 18, 2010 @ 1:35 pm
Please extend an invitation to Dr. Andy Barron to be included in the debate. I would love to hear from ALL candidates. Thank you!
Comment by Tiffany — October 18, 2010 @ 2:39 pm
Please include Dr. Barron in your debate. The public who supports your station demands that their voice is heard and that all candidates a have an opportunity to debate on the issues that trouble our great state.
Comment by Caleb — October 18, 2010 @ 4:02 pm
Andy Barron should be included in the debate.
Comment by Pat — October 19, 2010 @ 8:23 am
Dr. Andy Barron’s exclusion smacks of bigotry by a media who would like to conveniently ignore a Conservative Christian’s viewpoints because they find them so offensive. It is quite disgusting.
Comment by Collin — October 19, 2010 @ 10:20 am
I met with Andy Barron late one night as he was getting signatures in the gas station parking lot. I listened to what he said and I agreed with his thoughts and his beliefs. He had no problem saying that he was from a Christian background and would stand up for Texas. I say, here in Texas, we need someone that’s for us and not themselves. He should be included in the debate….Every voice should be heard
Comment by Krista — October 19, 2010 @ 1:55 pm
Please invite Andy Barron into the debate. As an undecided voter, I would like to hear what he has to say.
Comment by Keri — October 19, 2010 @ 6:37 pm
I think that if the citizens of Texas are to make a truly informed decision that Andy Barron should be included in the debate.
