Starting on Wednesday, September 1, KLRU Kids daily lineup will change. In addition to some shows changing time slots, we’re adding an extra show on Saturday mornings making kids shows go from 5 to 10 a.m. And we’re very excited to be bringing you a brand new series from PBS called The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That.
Voiced by award-winning actor Martin Short, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat guides friends Sally and Nick – with a little help from the Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2 – on fun-filled adventures where they make natural-science discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day. The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That will join the line up on Labor Day, Sept. 6.
Unfortunately we are also loosing one KLRU Kid favorite from the lineup. Since its premiere in 1999, Dragon Tales has helped build children’s social emotional skills, as well as supporting a music and cultural diversity curriculum. Production of new episodes concluded in the third season, in 2005. As broadcast and web rights are set to expire, PBS will no longer be able to show episodes of Dragon Tales or serve web video and game content after August 2010.
Here is the new KLRU Kids Lineup:
- 5 Sesame Street (Sun) Mister Rogers (Sat)

It’s terrible but understandable that such important T.V show will be off the air. Dragon Tales has been my kids favorite show since they were 18 months old. They are now 2 and 4 and still love it. I can’t believe it but i understand it.
Dragon Tales we will miss you Today,Tomorrow, and Forever.

I love PBS, & I love klru. This lineup looks great; seems to stick pretty closely with the schedule as it is now. I do wish Martha Speaks was on a little earlier or later in the day as my kids (6 & 4) love it but often miss it due to nap or school. I wouldn’t be sad to see Barney & Friends go– although I am sad to see Dragon Tales going, my daughter will miss that show very much.
Thank you for the great lineup & for always listening to us, your viewers!

I’m so excited about the new time slots, very happy to see between the Lions come on earlier. I think this is a great lineup. Am I to understand that Mama Mirabella is going away as well? My daughter loves that show.
Thanks for the great programming!

I am very excited about the cat in the hat show but very disappointed Thomas the train has moved up so early. We are watching it now and really look forward to it at 8 on Saturdays! Would like to see Thomas more often as well!

I think this new lineup is better than before. Excites to see the new cat in the hat show. Glad to see Sesame Street and Curious George are staying put (my kid’s favorites). Also happy to see Sid the Science Kid get push later (always found that one a little annoying).
Thank you KLRU!

My 3 year old son and I have watched your programming since he was a new born. He is excited about the new Cat in the Hat and I am glad to see you have The Electric Company set to run Monday through Friday now. Dragon Tales will be missed by my boy but not by me. The noon slot for a rotation of Thomas and Friends, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina and Franny’s Feet will be nice too. Thank you for broadcasting something worthwhile for us all to see.
One question: What happened to The Biscuit Brother? Our whole family are fans of the show and wonder what happened to it.

I am so happy that y’all are moving Between the Lions up earlier in the day, it is just in time for my daughter to watch after school & before naptime! We will miss Dragontales (except for Wheezy–her voice was baaaaaaaaaaaaad!) but I am happy to see Thomas added into the rotation. You could lose Mr Rogers & we wouldnt be upset, not one little bit
We are sad to see that Saddle Club is going, as my daughter LOVES horse shows, and that is one of her favorites.. We were wondering what happened to Biscuit Brothers? It used to be on more often, and now is only Saturdays?? If it could be put back in the weekly lineup that would be fantastic!! My daughter LOVES Bob, Angelina & Franny, so those are great!
Thank you KLRU!

I just saw the Cat in the Hat for the first time and not terribly thrilled, especially because it took Curious George’s time slot at 8 AM. My toddler used to watch the last 15 minutes or so of Sesame Street then Curious George while everyone else busy getting ready for school/work, and the lineup was perfectly suited for very little kids. This one isn’t. Hope KLRU reconsiders keeping SS and CG together.

I understand completely that the schedule must change every once a while. I do not have a problem with that at all. What I do have a problem with is why change it in the middle of the week and change only some of the programming each day. It left me and my 3 year old very confused. my suggestion is that you change it all at once at the beginning of the week.

Waited to see Cat in the Hat to give it a chance, not age appropriate for the time slot of the morning as Sid the Science Kid. All children for which this is targeted are likely in school. In my opinion, this should be in the afternoon. It has a lot of publicity on several channels and I am disappointed that KLRU added this program to the lineup at this time slot, regardless of who is voicing the program, it should be vetted more appropriately. I love the books but when a program encourages children to break rules and push boundaries there needs to be accountability on the channel that airs such a program to ensure that the children who are getting this message are of the correct age to understand consequence. The proper programming for pre-school aged children was moved to a later time at which most pre-school aged children are taking their first nap of the day. We count on PBS children’s programming as our only source of TV for our preschool aged children. My accountability will be to ensure that my child does not watch a program with such a message.

I agree with the most recent comments, the new “Cat in the Hat” show is definitely for older children who SHOULD BE IN SCHOOL at that timeslot. I’m quite disappointed at the lack of foresight in this schedule change… is there nobody on the team that designates the lineup with children or even an idea of the habits and level of understanding consequence of preschool aged children? Not appropriate, just lost my funding! Also wondering why commercials for this new show have been all over other channels like Nick Jr and others… must be a money thing. Feels a little too commercial and less educational.

THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! was created in response to recent findings that children graduating from kindergarten are less prepared to learn about science than about other subjects. The series supports young children’s science learning by introducing scientific inquiry skills, teaching core science concepts and vocabulary, and preparing preschoolers for kindergarten and first grade science curriculum — all in whimsical style.
A team of science and early childhood experts developed the curriculum for the first season’s 40 episodes, each of which begins with a question posed by Sally or Nick. Although the Cat knows a lot of things, his insatiable curiosity to learn more about the world leads to adventures with Sally and Nick in his one-of-a-kind Thinga-ma-jigger, a marvelously Seuss-ian contraption that sprouts wings, pontoons, booster rockets, skis, and just about anything else needed to find the answer. The inquisitive gang travels to the bottom of the sea to observe giant sea worms, zips to the rain forest to visit animals living in Kapok trees, and shrinks to bee-size to visit a hive and learn how honey is made. Guided by the Cat, the kids figure things out by observing, collecting and managing clues, making connections, constructing and evaluating theories, and having discussions — all in a preschool-appropriate manner.

Not a fan of Cat in the Hat and neither are my 1 and 4 year olds. I’m glad because I find him annoying and I hate that their parents just let them go off and do anything they want.

In order for a television show to be educational for preschool children, it must hold the attention of a preschool child. It does not. This program was the main topic of discussion at our community SAHM playdate this morning, 17 moms and dads agreed that both they and their children disliked this program. Only ONE enjoyed the show, but it is important to add that she has a 7 year old homeschooled child, definitely not preschool.
My BARELY 2 year old child has been using a “magnify glass” for at least 3 months to look at small objects thanks to Sid the Science kid. He also tells knock knock jokes and likes to collect rocks/bugs/dirt and sift through them looking for a “discovewy,” all pretty much due to Sid. We’ve tried to get him interested in THE CAT IN THE HAT for the last week and the most he’s watched was 3 minutes before crying or just walking away.
In addition, am I the only person who notices the constant double entendres in this show? Of course, our children won’t understand these, but it’s still a little inappropriate.
