As the person responsible for KLRU's pledge drives, I can tell you that we spend a lot of time finding the right mix of programs to air during our drives. We are working to reduce the number of days we interrupt regular programming, and trying to use more programs from our regular schedule. However, when we are raising money on-air, it's important to do the best we can. Better results equals fewer pledge interruptions.

"Change Your Brain, Change Your Body" is one of only four self help-style programs we will air during the August drive. We have received a few comments about the show, but we weigh that feedback against the thousands of people who have watched and supported KLRU through this program. During the March pledge drive, "Change Your Brain, Change Your Body" was the number one show of the drive.

Quick Stat from the March Drive reflects our challenge: Change Your Brain-$34,282, Antiques Roadshow-$3,050.

After the drive is over, we will discuss all of the comments we've received before making a decision to use a program in future drives. Thanks to everyone for their feedback. We take your input very seriously. And thank you for watching and supporting KLRU.

I am a supporter of KLRU and just donated $500 while watching Daniel Amen. I am disturbed by the presentation of Amen's infomercial. I t have studied and taught nutrition at the college level for 13 years. Many of Amen's suggestions are not only ill-advised, but also dangerous. For example, he recommends fish oils and vitamin D. Vitamin D is one of the potentially toxic vitamins.

Much of the information about foods is old hat. Eating brightly colored fruits and vegetables is old news. He is consistently promoting his books, diets, SPECT, etc. Here are Amen's responses to some questions posed by folks at quackwatch.com:

http://www.quackwatch.com/06ResearchProjects/amen_response.html

He is a psychiatrist, i.e., medical doctor, but he is not trained in the field of nutrition. It is people like Amen who keep the field of nutrition in the realm of quackery. I would be so much happier to support KLRU if you would interview or present serious investigators like Michael Pollan or Eric Schlosser.

If you tuned in right now, you would hear him say, continuously, "In the program...I tell you..." It is really irritating me to hear this.

Save the integrity of KLRU.

Another example - he just said someone who was overweight was injecting himself, at the dinner table, with insulin. A person with type 2 diabetes, does not, generally inject insulin. In fact, usually, a type 2 diabetic is hyperinsulinemic, i.e., has high circulating levels of insulin, to which his/her body does not respond.

The guy lacks credibility, for me.

I thought you'd given up on these stupid infomercials for raising money. I donated during your last pledge drive, but will prefer to give to PBS rather than KLRU from now on.
