KLRU introduces KLRU-Q

KLRU introduces a new channel KLRU-Q on July 1. KLRU-Q will be free for all of our viewers and include an eclectic mix of PBS programs and other shows not seen on KLRU.

KLRU-Q will replace Time Warner Cable’s KLRU2 and Grande Cable’s KLRU-G on those two cable providers. Effective June 22, KLRU-G will no longer be part of Grande’s channel offerings. On July 1, KLRU2 will no longer be part of Time Warner Cable’s offerings.

KLRU-Q will feature entertaining and inspiring shows about creative lifestyle, science, nature, history and more. Q will feature ‘blocks’ of programming throughout the day, with genres chosen specifically for the Austin audience. We’ll be bringing you more details on this in the next few weeks.

Over-the-air viewers can receive Q in addition to KLRU and KLRU Create for free. Grande and Time Warner will carry Q and KLRU Create in their digital tier.

Over the air Channels:
KLRU 18-1
KLRU Create 18-2
KLRU-Q 18-3

Grande Channels:
KLRU 9/309
KLRU Create 283 (Only available to digital cable subscribers)
KLRU-Q 284 (Only available to digital cable subscribers)

Time Warner Channels:

KLRU 9/1541
KLRU Create 1542 (Only available to digital cable subscribers)
KLRU-Q 20/255 (Only available to digital cable subscribers)

  1. KLRU Says:

There is no cost to the station of utilizing the bandwidth to deliver a third channel; the only costs are for the programming content and for the personnel to program the channel.

Regarding the programming content, KLRU is using PBS content, which we have already paid for as part of our annual PBS programming fees.

As far as the cost of the staff to program the channel, no new positions are required. The person who is programming KLRU-Q is the same person who has previously programmed KLRU2 and KLRU-G.

The decision to eliminate KLRU2 and KLRU-G is based on the station’s desire to end the practice of programming channels that are only available to customers of certain cable companies and not to others — by ending the two channels and, instead launching one new one that is available to everyone.

  2. Tim Says:

As someone who gets over-the-air local programming through a DirecTV HR20 DVR, it’s my understanding that for 18-3 to be receivable on our set top boxes, the Tribune folks need to know to add it to their channel guide. There have been times when it has been weeks or even months before that has occurred and we weren’t able to tune to stations already live over the air. Hopefully that’s being prepared for in this case so users of DirecTV HD DVRs will be able to get the over-the-air signal on 18-3.

  3. Nicole Says:

I’m thinking about switching to AT&T’s service. Can I watch KLRU Q on there?

  4. KLRU Says:

    Tim,
At this time DirecTV is not planning to carry KLRU-Q. DirecTv indicated they do not currently have the bandwidth to include 18-3 on their offerings.

    Nicole,
We are still in discussions with AT&T and other cable/satellite providers about carriage of KLRU-Q. We will post channels and information as soon as we have that information.

  5. Greg Says:

As many of us have expressed sadness about losing Mr. Rogers Neighborhood as a daily show, please consider running it daily on KLRU-Q (assuming PBS renews their rights for local stations to run it.) This would be an excellent children’s program for your second station, even if it isn’t popular enough to warrant time on KLRU-1.

    Thanks!

  6. Diana Says:

Will “Religion and Ethics Newsweekly” be available on KLRU-Q? It is one of my favorite programs and influenced my recent switch to Grande vs AT&T, because KLRU-G carried it. If not, couldn’t it be carried on the main KLRU channel? It is a very thoughtful and intelligent program that explores the different aspects of all religions and the influence religion has on our lives, culture, and politics. It is great, and I’m surprised it isn’t more popular here in Austin.

  7. Carol Says:

I checked the schedule for Saturday July 1. I currently enjoy Scrapbook Memories, Fons & Porter Quilitng, Knitting Daily and America Sews every Saturday morning. I do not see those programs shown. Will those programs be available on KLRU -Q?

    Carol

You misunderstand — I’m not talking about it being delivered on their satellites. I’m talking about the integration the box has with over the air signal. It IS the OTA signal I’m talking about. To get it, the Tribune people (who run zap2it.com, I believe) need to know to have 18-3 in their channel guide. That’s all. If that happens we’ll be able to receive it over the air through these boxes. Basically, it’s just satellite integrated with an ATSC tuner for over the air reception.

We can already get 18-1 and 18-2 on these boxes over-the-air even though DirecTV doesn’t carry Create. They don’t need to carry it on their satellites. But KLRU needs to make sure Tribune gets 18-3 in their channel guides.

From KLRU: Sorry for the confusion. Yes, we have already provided the information to the listing services. And thus you should be able to get KLRU-Q (18-3) in the same way you get KLRU Create (18-2) through DirectTV.

  9. George Says:

KLRU-Q is not an even replacement for KLRU-G. KLRU-Q will only be available to people who pay the much higher digital cable package. KLRU-G was part of the basic package.

  10. Pam Niedermayer Says:

Well, I’m confused. Will KLRU-Q be available online? Via Time Warner? What.

    Thanks,
    Pam

From KLRU: KLRU-Q will not be available online at this time. It is available over the air on 18-3. If you have Time Warner it will be on channel 20 or 255 for digital subscribers.

  11. Barbara Says:

I’m a senior with very limited means, so my monthly bill for Grande basic cable AND local telephone is less than $25. Upping the ante to their pricey digital tier is untenable, so I’m effectively disenfranchised from the programs that interest me the most. I’m an apartment-dwelling paraplegic who lives alone, so I could not adjust antenna connections for a non-cable option. Bitterly disappointed, especially now that I cannot tape overnight shows to watch during kid-time daytime TV. Mr. Rogers was the one bright spot…I raised my kids on his shows since 1968 in California and find it even more germane in these times.

  12. David Hillier Says:

I’m glad to see KLRU coming out with another station. For those of you that are concerned about not being able to get the new KLRU station due to their cancellation of contracts with cable providers, you can watch it with a pair of “rabbit ears”. I don’t have cable because I can’t justify spending that amount of money for commercials wrapped around some run of the mill tv program. I am 100% satisfied (to say the least) with the options that KLRU has provided for free. As always, I will be an avid supporter of KLRU and continue to contribute to their fund raising drive. It’s nice to have educational programs that don’t have an agenda to try to make me buy something (i.e. commercials), try to convince me to get a medication with worse side effects than what’s it supposed to be treating, or try to make me believe that we have to watch out for terrorists, pirates, or any other bad thing that’s supposed to make me afraid and stay in a state of ignorance.

  13. Shirley Says:

I agree with Diana - please air Religion and Ethics Newsweekly on KLRU-Q. It’s a unique and excellent program. Also, will BBC comedies continue on Saturdays from 8 to 11 pm? The 8 to 9 pm slot has been taken by a show on the beginnings of American TV for the past two Saturdays - please bring back BBC comedies for the entire three hours. Lots of possibilities - Kingdom, Rosemary and Thyme, even repeating Monarch of the Glen.

  14. Cynthia Says:

The main reason I subscribed to Time Warner cable was to be able to get KLRU 2 at 7 or 10 PM and to be able to watch Masterpiece Theatre on Monday instead of Sunday. Does this change mean I will not be able to do this?.

If so, I will not continue to contribute to KLRU. I am sorry but these recent decisions do not seem to be in the best interests of your viewers. I guess my contribution will go to Time Warner for a $10 month DVR fee so I can record the Newshour.

  15. RAMONA COVEY Says:

I live in Blanco TX and up till a couple of days ago I could get KLRU with a long range antenna. The last couple of day, I’ve adjusted the antenna many times and still get a low signal status. What’s up. I can’t afford cable and PBS is my favorite channels.

  16. Angela Says:

I see someone else is asking whether Fons & Porter Love of Quilting will still be available. I look forward every Tuesday and Saturday to this program. Please inform us if it is still going to be broadcast . It is the main reason I ever watch KLRU.

  17. David Says:

I’m looking forward to KLRU Q.
Is there any chance it might show some of the classic Doctor Who episodes that were a regular feature on PBS in years past?

  18. Chris Says:

Will KLRU be posting a schedule of shows to be aired? And will the listing be available via the TV Guide listings?

  19. Wayne McAfee Says:

Thank You for KLRU Q. We are wondering if “Last of theSummer Wine” be shown on this new channel?

We see that Summer Wine is being replaced by Doc Martin (which we also enjoy very much) soon, so we were just hoping that Summer Wine will be shown on Q or some other KLRU channel.

    Thank You,

    Wayne McAfee

  20. Sara Says:

The previous posting by KLRU indicates that KLRQ will be available on regular (non-digital) Time Warner Channel 20, but I just turned on that station and it is still as blank as it has been since you pulled that station. Is this going to be corrected? It is very frustrating not to be able to tape an overnight show or watch it the next night (as for the Mystery series) as we could under the old system.

  21. Sara Says:

I just talked to Time Warner about my previous post, and they said that KLRU network decided to broadcast the new station only in digital format. Therefore, unless a person has a digital box on the tv, the channel doesn’t come in. Since I don’t have a box and don’t need one for any other stations (including regualr PBS, Channel 9), I will not be able to receive your new station. Please look into changing this situation — I doubt I’m the only person in this disappointing predicament! Why not at least put the shows on-line if you can’t change the digital format problem?

  22. Paula Says:

Sara - KLRU-Q is an over the air fee channel. don’t you have the option of using yoru tv the regular way in addition to your cable connection? Or just have a second tv.

  23. Scott Talbert Says:

Get a digital box (if no coupon, box is wopping 50 bucks) or see if your tv can get over the air digital broadcasting broadcasting (If under a year old, you should have it). Most newer tvs take a sat box, cable box and a new dig box just fine. It can hook up to channel 3 inlet or in yellow, red, white connections like a dvd. A trip to Radio Shack will have you in good shape. I have a digital tube (read cheap) that tunes my local austin channels. With local tv I get KlRUs 2 and 3, RTV (42.2) and weather map from 24.2 and a spare spanish channel (good for soccer) I then have a Sattelite Dish (direct tv) to get cable based stuff like CNN, TBS excetra. If you have a limited budget, and really have cheap cable to get clear locals, get the digital box and dump cable. If you need the cable offerings buy the box till the services get their acts together and enjoy the new stations. The only hassles is switching around with remote. Get someone to teach how to use tv. You may have to keep dig box remote handy, but most of your viewing will probally happen with service (cable sat) remote. I also use dig boxes on my two tvs that don’t have sat. They look great and the new q channel is coming in great in Mc Dade, Texas.

  24. Taryn Says:

Is anyone else on the east side having the frame dropping issue on KLRU-Q? KLRU regular and Create are just fine but Q seems to only pick up every other frame. The sound is fine and the signal is high on my antenna but it is jumping from frame to frame (not breaking up like when you get bad reception). I live in the French Place area. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

  25. Taryn Says:

It seems that the problems I was having have been resolved. Not sure what they did because I never heard from anyone but I’m glad it’s fixed! Thank you.

From KLRU: Please let us know if it happens again. Our engineers were puzzling over this issue.

  26. Carolyn Says:

I am very disappointed that you are no longer showing The Newshour at 10PM. Is there any chance this can change? Many interested viewers are not home and settled by 7PM, and the 10PM Newshour was such a nice alternative to the local news programs.

    Please re-consider this decision.

  27. Bev Kelsey Says:

FONS & PORTER - hello? Three channels and only one sewing show that I can find - Sewing with Nancy. You have diminished my choices, not increased. Not Happy.

From KLRU: At this time, we are taking the Create schedule directly from PBS’s national schedule. KLRU is working to include sewing and quilting shows on KLRU Create since our local audience has requested them. As soon as we have the technical aspects of this worked out, you’ll see Fons and Porter and other such programs on Saturday mornings on 18-2. We hope to have this issue fixed in the next few months.

  28. Sam Says:

    TVGOS PRETTY PLEASE!!

So far I’ve really liked KLRUQ except that this is the only KLRU channel that uses PSIP instead of TVGOS. As a result, my TV Guide only goes out 12 hours instead of the full week. In fact it’s the only local channel that uses PSIP (excluding the Spanish stations).

  29. Philip Powell Says:

I really miss the repeat broadcasts of Washington Week, NOW, and Bill Moyers’ Journal that used to be repeated on Friday nights on KLRU2. Since the launch of KLRUQ I have missed every episode of these three excellent programs because their new broadcast times no longer suit my viewing schedule.
I also cannot get used to the shrunk down picture on KLRUhd: on many programs - oddly mostly British productions - the picture fills only ~40% of the screen. I have an old (and reliable) Sharp CRT TV (no plans or budget to switch to an LCD or plasma) and subscribe to TWC’s overpriced digital package.
    How I long for a British-style FreeSat service! (http://www.freesat.co.uk)

The Band Show featuring the ‘Fighting Texas Aggie Band’ on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. is great for all the Aggies who live in the Austin area. Very military and precise.

Be Fair! Set aside or program a 30 minute slot for the ‘Showband of the Southwest’…the Longhorn Band! You could schedule it right after at 11:30 or even in the afternoon. The LHB is not a military style marching band…but, always puts on a fabulous show during half times.

Why in the world would KLRUQ not want to showcase the local university marching band??
