Program: In Context Special  Ballet Austin’s Hamlet
Date: Thursday, May 14
Time: 8 p.m.
Additional air date:  Sunday, May 24 at 4:30 p.m.;
June 4th, Thursday, at 8 p.m.; June 10th, Wednesday, at 7 p.m.

KLRU continues the station’s commitment to presenting the arts to Central Texas with a special presentation of the Ballet Austin’s Hamlet. Taped earlier this year, In Context will showcase this interpretation of Shakespeare’s iconic story at 8 p.m. on May 14 with a repeat on May 24 at 4:30 p.m.

In 2000, Ballet Austin premiered Stephen Mills’ contemporary and distinctive interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, hailed by The Dallas Morning News as “dance theater at its best”.  Since its debut, five other companies around the country (BalletMet in Columbus, Dayton Ballet, Ohio Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, and Milwaukee Ballet) have performed it to rave reviews.  Nine years after delighting Central Texas audiences, Mill’s production of Hamlet was again performed in Austin and recorded by KLRU.

Produced by Dutch Rall,  three-time Emmy-winning producer, director, cinematographer and editor for KLRU, this hour and a half presentation is part of KLRU’s continuing efforts to bring local art events to all of Central Texas. Earlier this year, In Context featured the Austin Lyric Opera’s Cinderella production and KLRU presented Conspirare in Concert. Future partnerships with other organizations are in the works.

Rall, who received a Lone Star Emmy Award for a short feature on the Ballet Austin for In Context’s pilot episode in 2005, said “Ballet Austin is always a fun subject for me because Stephen Mills, their production team and the dancers are all such consummate professionals. Austin is lucky to have them working at such an ambitious level and KLRU is even luckier to be able bring their work to a larger audience.”

  1. Dear Sir or Ma’am,
    On Thursday night May 14, Ballet Austin’s “Hamlet” was broadcast. The last 15 minutes of this beautiful performance was abruptly interrupted. What followed was a “groundhog day” of weekend program highlights. Weekend program highlights were repeated over and over again four times! It was bizarre to say the least. Then “Live from the Artists Den” was abruptly ended early and once again an “Austin City Limits” preview was aired for an untold repeat and then there was a strange dead zone with a Number 3 on it and this lasted till 8 minutes or more of “Dr. Who”. Now I am a contributer to KLRU and I have a generous contribution to send in. I only watch KLRU as other programming holds little or no interest for me. I am an ardent supporter of and believer in Public Broadcasting. I am very very concerned about the very poor errors which have been happening lately on KLRU. If KLRU is going to expect viewer support then I should expect better management and oversight at the station.
