I’m not an art critic, nor am I an expert. I can’t talk art history, and I can’t compare genres. I can, however, go to a museum and find myself moved by the images staring back at me from the walls. That’s how I appreciate art – by appreciating it. By letting it into my head to bounce around, and waiting to see what affects it triggers.
When I heard about Jared Dunten and how he paints with his mouth, I was impressed. When I saw what he painted, I was blown away. His art isn’t good because of how he paints. It’s great because Jared is an amazing talent.
What’s more, Jared himself is amazing. Paralyzed from the neck down, he finds comfort in his painting. He can’t move, but he can create, and the satisfaction received from that is universal. His goal is to paint himself out of his chair, and in the process of doing so, bring attention to a condition he hopes will one day be curable.
