Memory Trail, created by University of Texas Dean of Architecture Fritz Steiner and professors Jason Kentner, Karen Lewis, and Lynn Miller, is one of five finalists in the competition to design the memorial to those who died in the crash of United Airlines flight 93 on September 11, 2001. After research of the site and the events that occurred, including contact with the families of the victims, the team chose a design that combines landscape design with architecture in order to create a balanced and multi-faceted tribute to the victims of this tragedy. "The design, on one hand, tries to recover the natural landscape -- to heal it -- but at the same time, recognizes in the design something very unusual happened in this place on that day," says Steiner.
