The Relatives

June 28, 2012

In this episode of Arts in Context, Dallas Gospel group, The Relatives, perform songs from their album “Don’t Let Me Fall”. The Relatives’ message is saturated with the R&B stylings of the latter 20th century. During their hey-day in the 70s, they performed in churches, theaters, and nightclubs across the US. Austin music collectors Charisse Kelly and Noel Waggener were big fans of the vintage recordings made by this group, and set out to locate the band members. Kelly and Waggener found the lead members Rev. Gean West and Rev. Tommie West in Dallas, where they talked them into resurrecting the band for a series of tours. The group was re-welcomed with open arms by the public and their recordings were reissued on an album under the Heavy Light Records label.
