Development Associate

Experience and Description of Job Duties:
KLRU-TV, Austin PBS seeks a Development Associate to support the Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development and the overall efficient functioning of the Development office.  The ideal candidate has a bachelors degree, at least 2 years experience assisting at the executive level, excellent organizational and customer service skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.

Corporate Support Intern (Fall Semester)

Under the supervision of the Director of Corporate Support, intern will be responsible for assisting with tasks related to local underwriting.  The internship program is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn about administration of and fundraising for a non-profit media organization including but not limited to: report preparation, communicating with donors and prospective donors and the local foundation and business community. The intern will be required to have the following skills: an interest in fundraising, marketing, and development in a non-profit media setting, excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and online services, a general sense of administrative management. For qualified interns working for KLRU, the following duties will be required but are not limited to: assisting in preparation of underwriting presentations, tracking on-air underwriting spots and preparing reports, updating donor contact information, assisting with mailings to the local business community, communicating with in-kind trade partners and tracking the status of the trade, providing clerical and administrative support for supervisors.

Events Intern (Fall Semester)

Under the supervision of the Director of Events, the intern will be responsible for assisting the development staff in various phases of event production and administration. The internship program is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn about all phases of event production including but not limited to: developing event plans; day to day logistical planning; communicating with clientele, members, and donors; creating opportunities to generate revenue from events; and event evaluation and follow up. The intern will be required to have the following skills: interest in the coordination, planning, and support of special events, daily operational and administrative functions; excellent organizational and communication skills; detail oriented thinking; familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Online services; and a general sense of office administration. For qualified interns working for KLRU, the following duties will be required but are not limited to: support the Director of Events in various aspects of event production for events such as Block Party Gala, Studio Tapings, and other KLRU related events; research and assist in developing a business plan for studio rentals; assist in the studio tapings of Texas Monthly Talks and Austin City Limits; assist the Director of Events with member and donor specific events and help seek opportunities for other revenue generating channels and partnerships; and provide clerical and administrative support for the Director of Events, development and management of KLRU. Interns for KLRU are unpaid but may earn college credit.

Grants & Research Intern (Fall Semester)

Under the supervision of the Director of Grants & Research, the intern will be responsible for assisting with tasks related to prospect research.  The internship program is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn about administration of and fundraising for a non-profit media organization including but not limited to: prospect research; report preparation; communicating with donors and prospective donors; and the local foundation community. The intern will be required to have the following skills: an interest in fundraising, marketing, and development in a non-profit media setting; excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet searches; and a general sense of administrative management. For qualified interns working for KLRU, duties may include but are not limited to: conducting targeted prospect research on current and prospective donors using a variety of sources; assisting with the prospect management system, including prospect fact sheets; assisting with research regarding the local nonprofit sector; and researching local foundations with on-line resources. Internship is unpaid but may earn college credit.

Production Intern

Under the supervision of the Broadcast Operations Manager, interns will be responsible for assisting the staff in various phases of production. The internship program is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn about all phases of production including:

  • Tape logging
  • EFP field production
  • Pre- and Post-production coordinating
  • Research and story development
  • Studio production

The interns will work closely with producers, crew, and management staff to gain a full understanding of television production. In providing an opportunity for students to learn production from these various areas, the interns will be required to have the following skills:

  • General knowledge of broadcast media
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Internet browsers
  • A general sense of administrative management

For qualified interns working for KLRU, duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the production staff in various aspects of field production such as field shoots, logging tapes, video duplication, online research, and other duties as assigned
  • Research show topics via newspaper, magazine, online services as well as initiating telephone calls to applicable guests
  • Attend studio and field productions when available
  • Attain skills to assist in the producing of segments, which will include the field producing, logging and editing of applicable segments
  • Provide clerical and administrative support for the production and management of local KLRU productions

In accordance with KLRU intern programs, the intern must:

  • Be in attendance of an accredited college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Earn academic credit for internship
  • Provide confirmation of credit eligibility from college registrar’s office
  • Work a minimum of 12 hours per week, 150 per semester

Students interning for KLRU will have their internships terminated if they:

  • Do not maintain a consistent work schedule
  • Show a limited interest in the production process
  • Do not notify staff of tardiness or absence
  • Are unable to perform required duties listed above
  • Students whose internship is terminated will not receive college credit

Internship is unpaid but may earn college credit.

Deadlines to apply for internship

  • Fall Semester - May 15th
  • Spring Semester - October 25th
  • Summer Semester - March 15th
